In NYC Until July 1

John Erlich - 6-14-2005 at 01:01 PM

Hi Fellow Oud Maniacs,

I will be visiting New York City until July 1. Is there anything I shouldn't miss there? Music stores? CD shops? Shisha cafes?

Thanks,
Udi John

Hey,

There are some nice shisha cafes here in Astoria (Queens), on Steinway street. My favorite is called "Eastern Nights" in English. There are plenty in Manhattan too of course, those are the "shishi" shisha bars...

There's usually some nice music going on too at some regular places. I can forward you some emails and stuff if you want.

Let me know,

mavrothis

Hi Mavrothis,

Nice to hear from you. Are there any CD shops or Middle Eastern grocery stores or anything like that I shouldn't miss? I am travelling with my family, including an 11-month-old baby, so nightlife is not going to be a priority.;)

We will be staying with friends in Uptown Manhattan.

Efharisto Poli,
Udi John (and family)

I was just giving you the wrong info...

Let me check again.

I think the music store in Brooklyn is Rachid music. www.rashid.com

It's pretty big, with a nice selection of stuff. Check out the website, contact them for directions (sorry, I forget exactly where it is), and maybe pay them a visit if you have time. :)

Take care,

mav

Patterson, New Jersey has a strong arabic population. There is an arabic district with arab stores. One restaraunt I tried was Kamal's Lebanese cafe (or restaraunt?) they have good mishawi (grilled foods) and have argeelah/sheeshe. Theres also some home town argeeleh cafes with cofee and tea where you see old men playing backgamon, just like back home.

Also I never go to new york with out visting the sweets shop called NABLUS in patterson.
besides Shatilla in michigan, they have the best sweets this side of the pond. As you can tell by the name, it is palestinian owned.

Thanks.

I knew about Rachid, but didn't even think of going there (so used to them as an on-line store, I forgot about the regular one--on Atlantic Ave., I think).

Patterson: I'll look into that. I will probably be limited to subway-accessable places.

I've heard good things about the food at Yemen Cafe in Brooklyn, but have never been there.

Anyway, if I find anything good, I'll report.

Peace out,
John

I forgot to report back. We found 4 good Near Eastern restaurants in NYC:

Hoomoos Asli - 100 Kenmare St, New York, 10012 - (212) 966-0022 – Great Israeli/Middle Eastern food; cheap

Taam Tov, 46 West 47th Street, Manhattan (212-768-8001) – Great Bokharan/Israeli food; cheap

Zeytin - 5.2 miles N - 519 Columbus Ave, New York, 10024 - (212) 579-1145 – Great Turkish food; fairly expensive

Pasha Restaurant - 4.5 miles N - 70 W 71st St, New York, 10023 - (212) 579-8751 – Great Turkish food; expensive

We didn’t have much time for nightlife nor exploring neighborhoods in the Outer Boroughs.

Cheers,
Udi John
