need advice on buying oud ~$1500

spherop - 8-2-2005 at 08:53 AM

hey all - great forum.

it's a bit of a long story - but i need advice buying an oud, let me throw it out to you to make suggestions:

budget ~$1500
have to have the oud by the end of august
love arabic and north african styles in particular
i am a veteran guitar player - but beginner oudist
live in san francisco
the oud should be new or in perfect condition

the reason for the strict timeline is the oud is to be an engagement present from my fiance's family to me and it will be presented to me at a ceremony in early sept (it's instead of a ring - yeha!). because it's a present - it should be new or in perfect condition.

feel free to ask any questions to help me clarify. i can travel to LA or any other reasonably close location to check out instruments. seems like san fran is not a great location - but maybe i am wrong.

Why not buy the Shehata that the oudman, a great guy and member of this forum, has for sale at eBay right now.

It fits all your specs, including the price.

Hello spherop!

Welcome to the forums! I haven't heard how the following oud sounds, but I'm sure you can ask for a sound clip:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Professional-Shahata-s-Oud-Georges-Nahat-Replic...

I like the fact that it's based on a Nahat, but I'd still ask for a sound clip before bidding.

You could also get a Nazih Ghadban oud:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Beautiful-Professional-Oud-for-Sale_W0QQitemZ73...

or another Shehata...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Professional-Egyptian-Oud-Maurice-Shehata_W0QQi...

These are just the ones on e-bay...

SamirCanada is also offering an Elie Yammine oud for $1500 here on the forums:

Ask for a sound clip before you buy any oud!!! And if you're still debating between sounds after you get the clips, you can go ahead and e-mail me at truepharaoh21-(at)-hotmail(dot)com (just replace the -(at)- with @ and the (dot) with .) and I'll be more than glad to help you out.

Again, welcome to the forums!

Hello spherop

I just saw you post, I was away for a while.
I think you should also consider Abu-Alla ouds, he is making Bashir style ouds. I have one of his ouds, and I think that I was lucky for having this oud.

My email: mabozaed@gmail.com

Regards
Muhammad.
