My New Oud from Dincer Dalkilic

LeeVaris - 8-14-2005 at 05:16 PM

Here's a shot of me with my new Dincer Dalkilic oud - to see more detailed shots go here:

Dincer's oud is one of the finest instruments I've had ther pleasure to play - very similar to the one he made for Mavrothis, it has a very expressive voice!

Sound sample

I'm not really good enough to do this instrument any justice but here is a short sample. I have a longer piece that I wrote on the other link - unfortunately the sound quality doesn't really capture the subtle overtones that Dincer's oud projects. Nor does it convey the feeling you get from the vibrations that come into your body from the back - really an amazing experience. I still love my other ouds - they have very different characters and are good for different moods. This one is very special though - anyone who is interested in Turkish style intruments, you can't go wrong with an oud by Dincer Dalkilic!

Lee, your taste in ouds never fails to impress me. I don't know much about oud construction, but the craftsmanship on this oud looks absolutely stunning. It also sounds fantastic. One question though, I have seen you with an arabic oud, an Iraqi oud and a turkish oud. Do you use 3 different tunnings? I'm always afraid of looking outside of the spectrum of arabic ouds because I can't play anything other than arabic tuning.

Adnan

Very nice Lee. Congratulations. Your photography is excellent. My brother and father were once pro photographers, so I have a decent feel for good photography. My brother still shoots, but of course now it's digital. He's using a D70 right now, but before that, Nikon and Hasselblad. Again, great shots!

Well... yes and no. I generally keep the 11 course Samir Bashir oud in CFAdgcf which is basically Arabic tuning with a high "f". I have a Foad Jihad (pictures coming soon) that I mostly tune FAdgcf - again, more like arabic tuning shifted up to the high "f". The Dincer oud came set up with strings for C#F#Bead, for the piece on the web gallery I tuned the C# and F# 1/2 step up to DGBead which ends up having the same intervals as arabic but up a whole step to D.

I like playing hijaz in Turkish standard tuning of EABead and I also like playing in a non-standard tuning of low BF#Bead. I never got the hang of Munir Bashir's tuning with the low string in the first position CdgcfF though I will probably experiment with it some more later on.

I love playing around in differnt tunings but I don't shift things around too much until I change strings. The Bashir type instruments will tollerate higher string tension so you can experiment with tuning up lower tension strings to get higher pitches but you want to be real careful with Turkish style instruments because they are built so light that you could damage them with the wrong set of strings!

Wow, that is beautiful. Look even at the cool end scroll for the peg box with the contrasting layers of wood. I know it seems like a little thing, but the whole oud just has a classic look to it. Love the wood, and I really think that mizraplek looks awesome--not too big, which I think is great.

Congratulations Lee, I hope you really enjoy this one. I got a chance to play this oud a few times, and it is really sweet. Play this oud as much as you can, you'll see in the next year how it will open up even more. :D
