Hello,
I am new to the forum (and the oud) and I love it. I have some questions that I hope someone can help me with.
1) Who are good builders for ouds priced around $1000. I have been considering a Sandi. Any other suggestions?
2) I have been listening to "The Great One", Farid al-Atrache, I am curious if any one knows the tuning he typically used? If I buy a Turkish oud can
I tune it to Arabic tuning?

Hey Coslito,
You can tune a turkish oud to arabic tuning, but why not just buy an arabic oud? If your spending a grand and want to play arabic music, the
best is to buy an arabic oud. The two makers you can't go wrong with are Nazih Ghadban and Maurice Shehata. There is a really nice shehat being sold
right now on ebay and is going for $1000.

I have a Sandi that I bought back in 1998 for $600. Not one of his top of the line ouds, but I like it a lot. Well made, and sounds very good. It
has held up very well.
But, I agree with revaldo--if you want to play Arabic music, buy an Arabic oud.
You can, though, tune a Turkish oud down to Arabic tuning. I love that sound, and I think some Turkish ouds sound better that way. Tremelo could be
a little bit more difficult, though, because there is a bit less tension in the strings. And, even if you tune it down, it is going to sound like a
Turkish oud that you tuned down, rather than an Arabic oud. It can sound great, but it won't be the same.
