You're welcome guys. You all know who Ahmad Fathi and Mamdouh el-Gebaly are, but Samuel and Ramy are two very fine up and coming oud players I think
as well. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a better recording for Ramy. He kept on getting interrupted, and the last one was when Modathir Abul
Wafaa walked in. Ramy told me he sort of felt uncomfortable continuing in his presence out of respect for him. Both Ramy and Samuel are super modest
guys, and it really took a lot of convincing to even get them to record anything. I also met Abdo Daghir on this trip. Modathir took me to his house,
but unfortunatley at the time he wasn't allowing anybody to record him. He and Modathir played a few of his compositions together, and he did an
INCREDIBLE violin taqsim in the middle of one of them. I really wish he had given me permission to record, but he said, if he did he would have to
divorce his wife. He told me "heleft" that he would divorce his wife if
anybody recorded him again. Now...who can translate "heleft"? Anyway...I told him, "Listen...I don't want you to divorce your wife. I won't record
anything." |
