Welcome to this site! I've been following it regularly for almost a year now, and can't say enough good things about it. In my view, Mike deserves recognition (some sort of Nobel peace prize, perhaps?) for being able to offer an outlet like this to persons from all over the globe, from all sorts of different backgrounds, and who range from enthusiastic neophytes to the most experienced musicians and builders.... Apparently, the sun never sets on Mike's oud forums....

You've got a very interesting collection of ouds, and oud-related instruments. I've got a particular interest in the Chinese pipa you've shown in the picture. I recently purchased a pipa myself and am learning to play it. How long have you had yours, and have you been playing it much?

You may want to check out a lengthy thread on this site dealing with the pipa and a variety of other Asian instruments. Just use the search feature in the toolbar above and search for "pipa" - you'll come across a thread reference titled "how different is the pipa from the oud", or something like that.

By the way, without wanting to pry, what is your home community in Northern Spain? On my mother's side, I have a great grandfather who came from near Barcelona, so I have a bit of a soft spot for the general region....

Benvinguts per l'intercanvi de coneixements, per informar i donar veu dels pensaments i las idees de l'oud d'orient. Us necesstem a tots i a totes per poder defensar e promoure la cultura de l'oud.....

Kasos is right, i am here since septembre and i have learnt a million things on oud. Thanks a lot Mike for providing facilities. I will back his nobel prize campaign.

On my side i am interested on this kind of kwitra-loutar. It is not a kwitra as kwitra has only four courses and yrs has 6, i believe. It is not loutar as
loutar is made with more skins than wood. Do you have a sound clip to send us ??

hello radixfc :

welcome to Froum, Where you are in Spain??

;)
hi everybody again!
I live in Pamplona, north spain... very closed to France´s border, a very nice place, but so cold and rainy in winter...
let´s see your questions:
-my pipa: I got it at xi`an, in china two years ago... so, so cheap... it costed around 50 euro. I haven´t played it so much but I recorded last year some songs with a friend... I´ll try to find some clips.
:buttrock:-the qitra???: I agree it´s not a qitra ´cos it has not 4 double strings... anyway it looks great. the sound is much softer than the ouds, and recently I added nylon frets, so I use it as a "lute" played whith fongers instead of pick. It could be a kind of lute-shaped guitar (6 single strings...). I got it al Marrakesch also two years ago...
and what about my ouds?????

¡Bienvenido!

¿Podrías poner fotos más grandes de tus Uds? Así se apreciarían más los detalles y podríamos comentar algo.

Yo también tengo uno turco.

Hi, Radix! Horthy is too modern to me!

I can see you play the oud with guitar picks, I used to do it until I got a real risha from Jameel: http://www.msocp.com/newtortis.htm

I am trying to sell my 8-string guitar to buy a good oud. Have a look: http://es.geocities.com/jazzchiss/anuncio8cuerdas.html :)

radixfc - 1-10-2006 at 02:28 AM

ha,ha!!! horthy is not the most modern thing I do... I usually play experimental electro music with my own project merak19 (http://www.tonatom.net)
:buttrock:
what a nice guitar! did you order it specially with 8 strings???
I´ve got a 12 string acoustic guitar, but nothing similar!!!
anyway, my wife would kill me if I bring more guitars/lutes home... see

kasos - 1-10-2006 at 08:08 AM

Thanks for sharing the picture of your whole collection... Some very niece pieces, great variety! I take it you play them all? Which are your favorites?

I've also taken great delight in learning instruments from different parts of the world. It's like travelling without leaving home.... things can get quite stressful at times at work, yet it seems there's always some instrument that seems to hit the exact spot for soothing whatever the trouble might be.

Though she's a musician as well, my wife has also sometimes had reservations about the number of instruments starting to enter the home - though, God bless her, she's continued to be very accomodating with my passion for visiting the world in sound....

Take care, Mark
