Hey guys... I was thinking... maybe we can all put our taqsims here... not as a competition by any means... but it'd be good inspiration for each of us to hear different styles and ideas.

Here's a taqsim I did on Thanksgiving. This is how my oud sounds (when it's tuned) :D Enjoy! What do you all think? Oh, and what maqam?

TP21

Great work TP

bahleh13 - 12-1-2003 at 09:05 AM

PROGRESS!! This is what I call progress!! I'd say it's marvelous TP. Bayati re, saba, kurd low re, gravitation to nishambour, and back to bayat with finish on sol. Brilliant man!! I bow to ur talent, O Mighty Pharaoh  <--- Me.

Hope we won't be waiting for next thanxgiving to get another piece like this. Keep up the good work man :airguitar:

Yours truly,
Basel :D

P.S. u rock :buttrock:

TruePharaoh21 - 12-2-2003 at 12:50 AM

Here's one from a few weeks ago... don't be afraid to post your own taqsims too!!

TP21

Another masterpiece

bahleh13 - 12-3-2003 at 04:32 PM

Man u never fail to amaze me :applause: you're getting real good. Nahawand is one nice scale, but TP is TP and saba has to be there too :) Of course you enticed me after our nice (though short) chat to grab the Oud and record (knowing it's 2:20 am here :D ). Hope this inspires u man, coz u "voted against it" before ;) Keep on the good work, and all y'all guys have to participate here too :) In this taksim is my first trial on the net for the "night pick" (costum made for "night owls" ;) ) you'll need to pump up the volume coz the mic wasn't that close as I imagined it was. first 14 secs are with the normal pick and the rest is played with the night pick. Note the success, my bro who happens to be sleeping in the same room continued his sleep without any disturbances (hope u guys don't hear him snoring though). TP i'll make u feel sorry u didn't give me ur mailing addy yet :bounce: Enjoy guys.

Yours truly,
Basel :D

TruePharaoh21 - 12-3-2003 at 05:47 PM

Allah Allah Alllaaaaaahhh... now THAT'S saba, Basel. My saba will come soon, but let us all sit and enjoy this beautiful work that you've done. By the way, I really like the night pick. That's pretty awesome, bud.

I encourage EVERYONE to post.

TP21

mysticoud - 12-4-2003 at 12:57 PM

I recorded this early this morning. I'm not very good yet so don't laugh. It is in makam segah. There are some bad notes, so be warned.

Cool!

bahleh13 - 12-4-2003 at 05:15 PM

Man this is good, however I don't find this in maqam sikah, I think this is a mix between hijaz and kurd  But it's great nevertheless, I loved it. As for Sikah (huzam) here's a "short" clip I cooked up again with the night pick, but this time I had to fix the volume of the mic to make it clearer. Enjoy guys. TP hope you're perking up your ears for this ;)

Yours truly,
Basel :D

P.S. Mike, you got a cool oud website, cool ouds, but aint got not even one taksim!! Man, consider this an invitation to descend and join us in this thread. I promise if anyone laughs I'll rip his lungs out ;)

bahleh13 - 12-4-2003 at 05:17 PM

Sorry guys, forgot to attach :D

Mike - 12-4-2003 at 06:07 PM

Good playing guys...way to go. :xtreme:

Basel, if I knew how to play the oud, I would have put a clip up already man. I've got a long way to go yet bro. :airguitar:

Take care,
Mike

mysticoud - 12-4-2003 at 08:42 PM

Basel
Not segah?:( Probably not, I still have a lot of studying to do. I'll post another taksim in a makam I am more familiar with later.

Taksim is difficult, you really have to know what you are doing. You guys (TP & Basel) make it sound so easy. Keep up the good work.

TruePharaoh21 - 12-4-2003 at 10:39 PM

I don't know anything about anything about taqsim... I have a very long way to go, but thank you all for your encouragement.

I encourage EVERYONE to post. By the way, mysticoud... beautiful taksim. :buttrock:

TP21

mysticoud - 12-6-2003 at 09:13 PM

I think this taksim is a little bit better.

Yazoal2K - 12-8-2003 at 04:45 PM

wow every one is really an amazing oud player, I tried so man times to post but somehow it never uploaded here is a sample for a song by abadi, I didn't play the whole Taqaseem or songs because the file is going to be to large, I also apoologize to Abadi for playing his song with my humble style

TruePharaoh21 - 12-9-2003 at 04:11 PM

Khalid, you can e-mail it to me if you like, and I'll make it small enough to be posted here. truepharaoh21@yahoo.com

Where's everyone elses taqsims? We have hundreds of people checking this site a day... I'm sure you all have ouds!!!:D

TP21

TruePharaoh21 - 12-11-2003 at 09:51 PM

Yazoal2K sent me his taqaseem, and I converted it so that we could post it here. Khalid, great job!

norumba - 12-20-2003 at 09:48 AM

ok, here are some of mine, off the new CD...
bear in mind its hardly traditional playing, coming to the oud as i do from guitar - but ive dealt with improvisation as a major focus of mywork for years, so there it is...
think of it as a mutant cross between Turkish and iraqi styles, with some 20th century avant agrdisms thrown in....

these are links to streaming mp3s:

TruePharaoh21 - 12-21-2003 at 11:52 PM

ra7aal_14 (saad) sent me this taqsim and asked me to post it for him on here. I knew it would be great before I even heard it, and it turned out to be even better than I anticipated. Great job, Saad!

sydney - 12-25-2003 at 05:01 AM

Hello fine people

I would like to thank Mike for his great work on this lovely web site that allowed all of us to show our feelings towards the oud. Please allow me to share my first try with all of you fine poeple.

thanks

TruePharaoh21 - 12-25-2003 at 12:21 PM

Emad, I gotta say, fantastic job on the taqsim! I hope this isn't the last time that you post a file for yourself. I love the sound of your oud, and your playing is great! Keep it up!

TP21

Mike - 12-25-2003 at 12:50 PM

Allah Allah Emad Bey! Way to go my man. Very lovely taqsim. I liked it a lot. Thank you for sharing, and thanks for your kind words. :applause:

Thank goodness for the oud which brings us all together around the world. :D

Many Thanks

sydney - 12-25-2003 at 01:26 PM

Hello fine people

I thank you very much for your nice words. I did not expect any of that. my face went all red Mr. TP are you happy now?

Thanks to all of you fine people

Emad from Sydney:bowdown:

Mike - 12-25-2003 at 03:14 PM

Dear Emad,

I went ahead and deleted the attachment that was in your post above. Attached in this post is the COMPLETE taqsim. I too was wondering what happened to the grand finale. :D I just cannot add attachments to other posts. Nice playing again.

Take care,
Mike

TruePharaoh21 - 12-25-2003 at 04:55 PM

Yes, Mr. TP is quite thrilled right now. I hope your face keeps going red, because I'm sure a lot of people have some fantastic things to say about your playing. Nice risha techniques, man! Sounds professional to me. If I could give you a high five right now, I would. I honestly hope this isn't the last time you post a taqsim. If I'm not right, please correct me, but I'm guessing you like to listen to people like Abadi el-Johar and that whole school of playing.

Bring on some more people!

TP21

elrabee3 - 12-25-2003 at 05:17 PM

Can not thank you enough

sydney - 12-26-2003 at 07:05 PM

Hello fine people

I can not thank you enough for you have made me feel that good about my oud playing. I do appreciate your nice words and I hope I am worthy of half of them.

I am lost for words with you Mr. TP21 and Jaber but I am sending another taqseem and I would like to dedicate it to all of you fine people wishing you all the best for the new year 2004 hoping for peace in the world.

Special thanks to Mike for we would not have all met if it was not for his great work on that site.

All the best to you all fine people.

TruePharaoh21 - 12-27-2003 at 03:04 AM

Allah Allah Allah Allah!

I can't say it enough. Emad, you have an amazing talent to you. Even your maqam changes are amazing. All I can say is Allah! Ya salam! I especially like the part at 1:04, but don't get me wrong, I love the whole thing. Ya sidi!

Allah Allah Allah Allah!

TP21

elrabee3 - 12-27-2003 at 09:02 AM

Emad, i am speachless.
tell us more about u, for how long u are playing oud, who taught u the oud ,etc..

Great Job Y'all!!

bahleh13 - 12-27-2003 at 02:17 PM

First of all, Merry Christmas and Happy festivities to all y'all out there. Sorry I couldn't cook up a present for y'all, I can't record now coz I'm cleaning my computer from all the nasty spy and adware that got "downloaded" into it

Now where were we?! AH yes!!

:applause:Woah guys :D Now is that a great thread or is that a GREAT thread?! What can i say? Mysticoud the file was great, like the one before. Khalid, heck with the apologies, u ain't done anything wrong or bad, bud ;) Saad, what can i say, ur the usual Saad, amazing!!
Now, Eyad from Sydney.... First of all welcome to forum (sorry I've been away for sometime to welcome u before). now that the formalities are done, let me continue TP's work by making u blush even more. You are amazing, wonderful, how can u do that?! Both taksims are great, however i find pleasure in listening to the first one. Simple, short, but brilliant (and one of my favorite maqams too). Thanx a lot for ur contribution :xtreme: Of course this means commitment, and two taksims aren't enough, so we're waiting for more, along with details about u (elrabee3's request).
Further more, I'd like to request from Saad and the others a taksim also on kurd, not that I want to compare, but simply coz I LOVE kurd, and want to collect ur taksims (knowing full well that each has his own style) and listen to it :D hope I'm not too picky in asking such a thing.

Peace for y'all,
Basel :D

Jameel - 12-27-2003 at 04:53 PM

Emad,

You are a real pro. I like your taqasim like I like Farid's or Abadi's (better!) None of this new age stuff. Glad to see there are those keeping the classic music alive:applause:

Jameel - 12-27-2003 at 06:42 PM

How do you guys get your file size down enough to post? I am using Cool Edit 2000 and can't seem to get anything under 2 meg. Any help?

TruePharaoh21 - 12-27-2003 at 06:49 PM

Jameel, I use a program that converts the file (wav, mp3, wma) into real player format. This is called the Helix Producer Plus 9 (Their Basic one can be downloaded by clicking here.)

If you want to post videos ever in real player format, you just use the same program. It deals with both videos and audio.

By selecting the file, then clicking Audiences, you remove everything except the 20 kbps (28k dialup), and then convert! If you have any questions, e-mail me.

I hope this will help everyone out there and get them to post more.

TP21

Jameel - 12-27-2003 at 07:19 PM

TP21,

Thanks for the tip, but I just figured out how to save real audio files w/ Cool Edit. It's one of those "advanced" tab things....

Ok. I've been wanting to post some playing, but have been a bit shy. I've only been playing for less than 2 years. Don't be afraid to criticize.

TruePharaoh21 - 12-27-2003 at 08:30 PM

Jameel, I love a nice, calm taqsim. Too often, the flashiness that takes so long for us to learn ends up drawing us in forever. It is good to know that you have both the serene and the exciting parts in your taqsim. You seem to be very comfortable with Nahawand. Don't disappoint us by not posting again. Bring it on, Jameelo!

By the way, is the oud your playing the one you made yourself? It sounds great.

TP21

sydney - 12-28-2003 at 02:45 AM

Hello Fine people,

Jameel is that your name or is it the way you play? That was really cool taqseem, You almost put me to sleep in joy man.

You see guys , there are lots of fine people out there keeping up the good work.

:applause: Very good Jameel . All the best man. I was really moved by your taqseem

TruePharaoh21 - 12-31-2003 at 01:23 AM

I'm not sure if everyone saw this post on the other part of the forum, but it's definitely worth checking out:

http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=355#bottom

Emad (sydney) posted a great oud piece there. Man, you make some great music.

I've also changed the name of this topic to Taqsims and Songs. The reason is that some people are more comfortable playing songs (samai, longa, pesrev, sirto, etc.) rather than taqsims, so I'd like to open it up a little more.

I look forward to seeing some more posts.

Thanks TP21. (And Emad from Sydney, too:) I am trying my best to learn from a distance. My teacher is Issa Boulos, but I am 4.5 hours drive from him, so I only get a couple lessons a year.

That is the oud I built. Right now it is my only oud. I am trying to get another one started soon, and I will let you all know how the progress goes, if you are interested in that sort of thing. I'll also post another taqasim/song soon. This thread has got me motivated.:bounce:

Emotional - Kurd

sydney - 12-31-2003 at 09:31 AM

TP21 ... That Kurd of yours is rather emotional.. You seem to have a great passion towrds that maqam and it seems to match your feelings for the time being.
I do not mean to get too personal but that is what I felt. I like your musical senses. I like your sliding on your strings it is perfectly done. I am thinking of an advice to send you by e -mail when I put it in the right phrase.

That was rather emotional kurd ... very sweet and very motivating.

All the best TP21 :applause:

Hello Fine people

Guys you got me strongly motivated about taqseem. I honestly wasn't into it at all before. I guess I got inspired by all of you. Here is a new one played and recorded 1-1-2004 in other words "FRESH"
:D

I hope you like it

Thak you fine people

Emad from Sydney

TruePharaoh21 - 12-31-2003 at 09:15 PM

Emad, you never fail to disappoint me. The taqsim was great. My favorite parts (even though the whole thing was fantastic) were probably 0:22-0:25 and 2:02-finish. Nice job, man! And of course, Happy New Years!

I also wish a Happy New Years to everyone on the forums. I think it's befitting that I thank Mike for giving us this forum to be able to discuss the oud and the magic that comes out of it. I wish you the best of years this year, and may each year after it be better than the one before it.

Having a new year means having some new people and some new taksims! Bring it on! And for those already on the forum, we haven't heard all of you yet... please post!

Hi Emad

Is there any chance you could repost all your taqsims? I have been away on holiday for a couple of weeks and missed all of them, unfortunately. Look forward to hearing them.

Best wishes

David

Hey guys!!

bahleh13 - 1-4-2004 at 02:07 PM

TP once again I tell u u never fail to amaze me. Thanx for the delivery to my mail too :) I sent a more detailed praising there, but I will not deprive u of the comments u deserve in front of all the good listeners here in the forum: knowing u TP, good is a BIG UNDERSTATEMENT for such a taksim. And here's my response with a taksim (u can here the wood creak in the beginning_ u know the reason man :() with a short fragment of my perspective in kurd. Hope y'all will like it. I was also experimenting my new custom-made pick: soft, but gives a good sound, enhances the rashat (when u rapidly and repeatedly pluck up and down), far better than the blunt thick pick; however a slight loss in control is an issue here  I guess no pick can be perfect. Anyways, the sound quality isn't quite the best either coz I had to compress and recompress the file to a suitable size. Enjoy Kurd on G:

Yours truly,
Basel :D

P.S...

bahleh13 - 1-4-2004 at 02:11 PM

Emad I too missed ur latest recording, I had internet problems and couldn't hear it before it was removed :( I hope u do reconsider reposting or u can send it to my email if u don't find it troubling for u: bahleh13@yahoo.com. Thanx a lot man :)

P.S.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL Y'ALL OUD LOVERS!!! Let's make this year the Oud's year! Peace and happiness be unto you, and may this year bring to all what they yearn for, and what pleases their heart.

Basel's Taqsim

TruePharaoh21 - 1-4-2004 at 03:27 PM

What a great taqsim on Kurd! Basel, you never fail to impress. I feel bad for what happened to the oud, but it's not even noticeable. Nice job, man! By the way... the risha seems to work excellently for fast tremolos. What'd you make it out of? I'm interested in your ingenuity, man.

TP21

Emad's Taqsims and Recordings

TruePharaoh21 - 1-4-2004 at 03:31 PM

Hey everyone. I was thinking about how to put Emad's (sydney) taqsims up. I was going to post them here for him... but I voted against it. After all, Mike just took a lot of the files off to make some space. In order to preserve this space, I made Emad a small webpage where you can find his taqsims and a studio recording.

Click here for Emad's Taqsims and Recordings

I trust that this will be sufficient for now. If the site just so happens to go down because of violation of bandwidth, just give it a few hours. Hopefully, you'll all be able to hear what I (along with much of the people here) admire so much.

Nice job, Emad! We look forward to new taqsims in the new year!

I am not able to say a word after what you have done for me. man I do not deserve any of that, I am just an avarage player .. listen to what people say about you , listen to Basel or Jameel . I am no where near you guys. You should not have gone through all the trouble of doing that web page. I do thank you thank you thank you deeply. I am really touched.:bowdown:

Mike , I can not thank you enough too. You have got me to get in contact with all these fine people. I am honored to know all of you.

Basel Taqseem

sydney - 1-4-2004 at 04:26 PM

Hello Basel

You have reminded me of a professional oud player who did not want people to recognise him while buying an oud in one of the shops. So he tried his best to sound like a beginner but he was that obvious that his talent let him down. You play in a very prfessional style.. you seem to have full control of your R/L hands as well as your feeling. I am delighted indeed.:xtreme:

Well done oud mate.

Emad from sydney

Thanx a lot!!

bahleh13 - 1-4-2004 at 04:30 PM

:D Geez guys, that's too much. TP I really hope u liked it, u know it comes from the heart ;) (I think u can understand what I mean).

Sydney, me compared to u, there's no difference, trust me brother Emad, I am so far from professional, I have learned the Oud alone, and the only "professional" thing about me is feeling the music, for I have lived my whole life (that'll be 21 years till now) with it  Ur comments have truly struck me profoundly bashful. By the way what is ur email?! Do u have an MSN or yahoo account? Maybe we can meet online sometime, I'm intrested in talking and sharing some bits of Oud info with u. Anyways, I have downloading ur taksim from ur post was an honor to me and I am lucky Mike didn't erase the post yet :)

TP about the risha's I was trying to snap shots for them but it aint working coz the resolution ain't so good. Anyways I'll start now recording with the different rishas I made, and post them, especially for u :)

Yours truly,
Basel :D

Amazing

sydney - 1-4-2004 at 04:35 PM

Hello Basel

I mean every word I say and I do say what I really mean. you are very very good. I wish I was half as good as you are now when I was 21 years old.. I am 35 by the way.

my e-mail is emad_philip@hotmail.com

and yes I do have MSN please contact me any time .. I'd be honored

All the best

Emad from sydney

TruePharaoh21 - 1-4-2004 at 10:46 PM

Basel, if I can just be half of what you are when I'm 21, I'll consider myself a great oud player. You have indirectly set somewhat of a goal for me to reach. Hopefully, I'll get there one day.

As for now, I thank you all for showing me so far what there is out there. I'm glad that people are still so involved in the oud. Hopefully, we can hear more of you all.

TP21

P.S. Emad, the least I could do is make a small, small, small site for you. Hopefully, one day, with enough material, I can be honored to make a huge one for you.

TruePharaoh21 - 1-6-2004 at 06:54 PM

Don't get all quiet on me now, everyone! We've only done like... 3 or 4 maqams. I know we got a ton more. Bring it on, people. You know who you are. :D

TP21

Jameel - 1-6-2004 at 07:28 PM

Very busy lately, but here is something short. Let's hear your version TP21!!:airguitar: Don't embarrass me by letting me play alone.

Jameel - 1-6-2004 at 07:29 PM

Whoops!

Happy Eid

TruePharaoh21 - 1-6-2004 at 08:33 PM

Jameel, that was jameel!! I took your lead and did a piece of Farido's taqsim as well. You're quite an inspiration. I'm glad that me and you are Farid wannabees! lol

By the way, Happy Eid to all of the Copts on the forum!

TP21

wanna be a wannabe!

bahleh13 - 1-6-2004 at 09:24 PM

U guys are doing a great job there :) Good work both of u. Jameel I like ur Oud's sound a lot and ur playing seems more advanced than the status u gave us previously :) TP, u catch on very quick to that particular technique, a lot earlier than I did :applause: TP and Jameel u both rock :xtreme:

Now here's my wannabe version for Farido. Note two things: A very audible crack in the beginning due to the humongous crack in the back of my Oud, and some missed notes in the taksim, a result of instability of the new "uncoated" night pick: no adhesive to give a sharp rather than dull dimished sound. Still couldn't figure out what to do to increase control without changing the sound which I like. Anyways, enough talking i'll leave space for my Oud to talk :airguitar: Enjoy

Yours truly,
Basel :D

TruePharaoh21 - 1-7-2004 at 12:31 AM

Wow, we're all a bunch of Farido fans here, aren't we? Basel, nice job on it! This just goes to show how much we can learn from each other...

I'm thinking of maybe having a maqam a week here (Hijaz one week, Kurd the next, etc.) and the players post a takassim or song from that maqam. This might open the forum up a little but more to those who are a little shaky to post now.

I hope everyone posts soon! We are all lovers of the oud!

TP21

Great Idea!!!

bahleh13 - 1-7-2004 at 04:36 AM

TP where do u get them ideas? :airguitar: I'll definitely stcik around for that thread. I cooked up this little piece with a little surprise in the end :D Hope y'all will like it.

Yours truly,
Basel :D

P.S. weather here is darn cold (-7C) so u'll excuse me if i sound like a frog, couldn't wait for warming up

Jameel - 1-7-2004 at 05:23 PM

Nice Work, TP and Basel. You inspire me. Thanks for the nice comments. Too much, really! I'm just learning. TP, I remember your first posts a few months ago with your guitar. You have come a long way. Way beyond me, for sure:bowdown: I won't be able to keep up with your weekly maqam challenge (especially since I don't really know the maqams), but maybe if you made it every two or three weeks, that would give everyone some more time. Here is a little bit in Rast (at least in the beginning--with a modulation to Nahawand and Bayat on G (I think)

Jameel - 1-7-2004 at 05:30 PM

First try was too big. Here it is:

TruePharaoh21 - 1-7-2004 at 06:21 PM

Basel, ana lisa faaker your singing. :D Man, when I read that there was a surprise, I didn't think it'd be that. What a great surprise!

Jameel, your parents were right on when they named you. The oud is beautiful, and the playing is filled with feeling. Is rast, by any chance, one of your more favored maqams? I ask because you're great at it.

As for the maqam a week (or every few weeks), I wouldn't just say... "Kurd... go!" My idea is to say "Kurd has this spacing... to do it from Do, it's these notes... from Sol, it's this." And that way, we all learn and then we can present. What do you all think?

Hicazkurd

zeyad - 1-7-2004 at 07:29 PM

Hi guys, I love this site and thank eveyone participating in the forum, and thank Mike for creating such amazing site, too.
Here is my first try Hicaz kurd... hope you would not be shy posting your feedbacks.
Zeyad.

TruePharaoh21 - 1-7-2004 at 09:07 PM

Ya Zeyad, Allah Allah... where've you been hiding yourself, man?

The sound of your oud is very nice, and your playing is great too. What kind of oud is it? Maker? It handles the treble pairs very nicely.

Hijaz kar is a beautiful maqam, and you made it even more beautiful. I certainly hope this isn't the last we hear a taqsim for you.

norumba - 1-7-2004 at 11:04 PM

Ive been swamped lately, but i should be posting a few different ones in a week or so - hard to record at night, and I have a lot of projects on deck. i did post those streaning MP3s a few weeks back...
Everyone sounds eally good! i can really tell the Farid influence here, thats great! any Turkish or Iraqi style advocates out there?

TruePharaoh21 - 1-7-2004 at 11:12 PM

I know of quite a few number of people here that play the Iraqi and Turkish style. I just don't wanna go runnin after them and forcing them to post. It's their choice. But I'll tell you this, I've heard them play, and they are fantastic. Let's just hope they'll play for us here.

Loads of notes

sydney - 1-8-2004 at 04:57 PM

Hello Fine People

it's been a while since I visited your fourms and amazingly I come back to find that load of notes which made me say WOW what is going on here. It seems like 2004 is a very inspiring year for most of us. Jameel in Farid-wannabe and rast taqsim is really cool also TP21 in Farid-wannabe has done a lot of progress that made me jealous. Zeyad my friend you sounded like you had a story to tell us with your H.kurd taqsim it was good yet it was unfinished. Basel you are a WORRY. what are you doing to us here man? that was really great I am lost for words keep it up will you !! :xtreme:

I was taken by surprise because of all that loads of fine notes you guys have posted. Thank you very much for sharing your good talent.

All the best to you all.

Emad from Sydney

TruePharaoh21 - 1-9-2004 at 10:44 AM

Sydney, I thank you for your very kind words. And if anyone's going to be jealous around here, it's me. I have yet to be even comparable to you all, but it is your encouragement that drives me further. Thank you.

TP21

P.S. I'll try to post something up this weekend. School's begun again, and I have no time.

RahatAlarwah

zeyad - 1-9-2004 at 07:27 PM

Hi guys :wavey: ,
This is my attempt for RahatAlarwah maqam. I am a beginner, so pease let me know if I am off the maqam. Mike, what do you think about making a topic for each maqam and then we post some taqasim and music for each maqam… with some explanations about each one "both the maqames and the pieces we post" ? I also would appreciate if the feedbacks are more informative. I know most of you guys are very good Oud players  and have so much to say ….so do not be shy to give your opinions…. This is how we all can learn more from each other, particularly beginners like myself.
Thank you.:airguitar:

a request

zeyad - 1-9-2004 at 07:39 PM

Hi TruePharaoh21,
my oud is Egyptian made by Ahmed Abdelhaleem. I use LA Bella strings "the third string are nylon" . I am going to sale my ouds, since I will be graduating and going back home very soon. May i request a Rast taqasim from you to post:) ?

Have a nice day.

TruePharaoh21 - 1-10-2004 at 12:35 AM

Zeyad, you played the maqam very nicely. I'm not sure why I don't hear this maqam played more often. It seems you have to be very talented to find the good parts to it... apparently, you're incredibly talented.

I will try to honor your request by tomorrow. I know of people far better than me on the oud, and also much better on the Rast maqam. I've only been playing now for about 9 or 10 months. Regardless of that, I will post as soon as I can. I thank you for actually asking this of me. I feel like the encouragement brought about in this forum is more important than most things. Thank you.

Taqsim Rast

TruePharaoh21 - 1-10-2004 at 03:41 PM

Well zeyad, here's your request. Keep in mind... I'm just a beginner.

(This taqsim has been removed temporarily)

Tell me what you think.

TP21

thank you TP21

zeyad - 1-10-2004 at 05:10 PM

Hi truepharaoh21,
You are cooooool  . Thank you for posting your Rast. It is a nice and happy taqaseem .
You played a Rast but, you emphasized the Bayati and Nahawand ajnass "which are parts of Rast for sure". The first 30 sec. or so are really Rast, and I like it so much. I wish it was longer :bounce: ..just to establish the Rast mood first , then you change to other Maqams. Man... you play with confident and have control of you Oud. It is hard to believe you played for only 10 months. Congratulations.
I heard the same thing about switching to other maqams after establishing the main maqam "mood", you are right. Your Rast taqaseem was long enough for switching to other maqams. You did really nice job. It was me that as beginner I expect too much Rasteeeeeee mood  "funny word ?" that maybe the reason why I did not feel the Rasteeeeeee feeling so much or as I expected J . By the way, playing long taqaseem is really hard for me, you seem to have not problem playing long taqaseems…any advice?
Thank you again for accepting my request for maqam Rast taqaseem.
Zeyad.

TruePharaoh21 - 1-10-2004 at 05:17 PM

I dunno how to give advice cuz I have no idea what I'm doing. :D I just pretended like I wasn't being recorded... I seem to play better if I'm not under pressure to impress anyone. When I finished, I noticed how long it was, and I was going to post a little disclaimer that said: WARNING! What you are about to hear is very long. :)

Like you said, Bayati on Re is like Rast on Do, only you take out the Do and add another Re at the end. I can see how they're very similar. I tried to establish my first, then moved on. I hope this was ok.

To play a long taqsim, just don't stop playing. I'm sure sometimes you'll sit there for an hour or so just playing whatever comes to mind. When that happens, start recording and don't worry about anything.

By the way, I'm in no position to give you advice, as you are far greater than me on the oud. If anyone should be giving advice, it should be you. :) I look forward to hearing from you again, and thank you for your comments.

Play on!

TruePharaoh21 - 1-11-2004 at 09:59 PM

Mostly any player who's been playing for at least a few months learns a maqam and finds some of the ins and outs of it so that they can get some ideas for a taqsim or a composition. (This is just my opinion).

Considering that case, I decided to go learn a maqam today and record a taqsim using that maqam. That way, it would be totally fresh. The maqam I picked (I think) is Rahat el Arwah... I hope I got the notes right. By the way, I was inspired to learn this maqam by zeyad, who posted a taqsim in this maqam a few days ago. If you haven't gotten it yet, please do. He's a great oudist.

Anyways, here's the taqsim. Don't be afraid to post criticisms. It drives me kinda. :D

how to access these sounf files

journeyman - 1-12-2004 at 09:27 PM

I'm probably not doing something that is obvious, but I don't see any of these sound files on my computer. I'd love to hear you all play, so could someone tell me how to access the clips? Thanks.

TruePharaoh21 - 1-12-2004 at 09:32 PM

journeyman, on the bottom of some of the posts, you'll find the word Attachment: (and then a file name). Click on this file to download it, and then you can hear it.

zeyad - 1-13-2004 at 06:23 AM

Hi TP21,
nice work man. I think you vary the speed of your playing better than you previous one.. i like that. You know? I am interested in hearing something on D from you :) because i can tell you play the D note a lot "you start with D a lot and sometimes end on D, too" How about if we hear Higaz or Saba on D from you next time?
Zeyad

TP TP he's our man...

bahleh13 - 1-14-2004 at 06:00 AM

TP TP he's our man if he can't do it no one can! Gooooooooooooo TP! "T" to the "P" to the "2" to the "1", "T" to the "P" to the "2" to the "1"! Go TP!!! Go TP!!!

Man I think u don't need any help on Rahat al Arwah, u just got a perfect speciment of it.

Keep up the good work man :D :xtreme: peace!

Yours truly,
Basel :D

TruePharaoh21 - 1-14-2004 at 10:01 AM

Thank you for your kind words, Basel. You're a major driving force in all of this. Also, zeyad... I'm glad that you liked the changes in the speeds. Like I said before you inspired me to do this.

I was stipulating whether or not I should do a Saba on D taqsim, but I wanted to clarify it with you first. I have:

D E$ F Gb A Bb C Db.

My question is, after that last Db, where to from there? D? Or another maqam? I'll try to do the same for this taqsim as I did for the Rahat el Arwah one... by which I mean I'll try recording the first attempt so it's fresh. I think it produced a little better results. I sense that I feel the maqam more that way then when it becomes routine (like Nahawand or HKK).

Thanks in advance.

TP21

Saba

zeyad - 1-14-2004 at 10:21 PM

Hi TP,
i think after d$ you go to E$.
Would yo uplease, make a topic for the Saba Maqam, so other members can participate? How about if you post a Saba on D taqaseem and I post Saba on A? Let's see how they sound :airguitar:

Enjoy your day.
Zeyad.

Taksim on Saba

bahleh13 - 1-15-2004 at 06:27 AM

Go for it man!! I await ur piece. As for what to play after the high Db, remeber one thing that this variation (opional of course) is based on Hijaz on F, so u get two choices: Eb (as in normal Hijaz) or E (as in shahnaz). Which to choose depends on the mood and apropriacy (whether u like to hear it like this or that). But personally man, try not to stray too much into deviating so much, coz sometimes it so happens that ur playing Saba on D, then u concentrate too much on the Hijaz part on F and u can't revert back to Saba without showing the listener that u "played wrong". Anyways, u can try, u have a good ear, so I think u'll know what's apropriate and what's not. I'll try to post the notes on Saba to help as soon as possible. Peace!

Yours truly,
Basel :D

Saba & family

sydney - 1-15-2004 at 03:47 PM

Hello Fine people

Saba and it's own family are my favorite maqams as well as some others. Lately I have been going through lots of hard times mainly because of losing some loved ones. I guess this where Saba stands out to comfort the soul and ease the pain a little bit. TP21 I have not forgotten all of you at all but I honestly do not wish to post my Saba taqsim. I guess you guys will hate me after.

With no doubt saba is a heart touching maqam

bahleh13 - 1-15-2004 at 05:30 PM

By all means pal, do post, we'll never hate someone who's emotions on the Oud made us love him :) If anyone has a different opinion let him dare and come up and I'll prove him wrong. Sydney I do feel sorry for the state u r in, and dunno in which way to console u. Anyways I'd love to share ur sorrows, at least by listening to the taksim, if u don't mind. I dunno what the other guys think, but at least u know my wish is truly from the heart :)

TruePharaoh21 - 1-23-2004 at 09:37 AM

I'd like to thank everyone who shared my sadness. I have losted one of my best friends about a month ago. It is hard to play any happy melos. when this happens. I thank you all for your understanding.

God bless

TP21 and Basel I do appreciate your feelings. I'll post something soon I hope.

TruePharaoh21 - 1-25-2004 at 11:54 PM

Emad, we're definitely looking forward to anything you can give us. Like I've said before, my prayers are with you.

As for the rest of the players here on the forums, we did rast, kurd, (some saba), (some bayati), and some Farido wannabe clips. (2 of us did rahat al-arwah as well). Maybe the next maqam can be something like Huzzam or Suznak, or maybe something more common like Hijaz. Just tossin out some ideas to you all. Don't be shy to post. We're all students at heart.

And yes, I will keep nagging you all until you post. :D If that's the way to get great music from you all, then I'll be here every day asking you for a piece. :airguitar:
