hbelal - 1-27-2006 at 12:58 PM

Hello all,

Just bought my first Oud in Egypt and would need you help and tips please.

Tunning it has been really difficult, its a 9 String Oud.
4 paired and 1 single
ive been reading about the tuning methods but i have a problem. I dont have a keyboard to tune on it.
would really appreciate if someone can record and upload thier own Oud tunning to everybody so we can just easly tune it on the uploaded clips.!
Thanks a million

u can get an electronic tuner and it will flash according to the note each string is in, thats the easisest method. u can also find a program that does similar on the net but u might need a computer microphone so your program can here your strings plucked. you can also get a tuning fork and tune one string and tune accordingly from there. and finally maqamworld.com has sound bits of notes you can tune too.

as for tuning being hard, there is gonna be one or 2 factors in regards to a new oud. first the strings wont settle right away if they are new. they will go out of tune for a few weeks. the best way to settle them is to tune everyday once or twice. when ur not playing, overtune it so u can stretch them out and stretch out by hand every so often but dont pull to hard.
Also check if your begs are easily twistable. if u have problems there then u have bad beg workmanship and need to get them either lubricated or redone. u can by some peg dope to grease it up so they rune smoother or if u need new pegs, get violin or viola pegs and have a reapir man replace them.

good luck,
Rami

Any tuning device will work, it doesn't need to be for oud. Just make sure it is a "chromatic tuner". That means it will tune any note, not just the notes from a certain instrument like violin or cello.
