Hi,
I am looking to buy a bouzouki from Greece. So i am windering if i can play "Arabic Makams" on Greece bouzouki which has metalic Frets ?!
I have two bouzouki's, one is Baglama which has plastic frets , which you can adjust them and play arabic makams and Normal Bouzouki (arabic
Bouzouki), which i bought it from syria.
any way, please advice me?!
Thanks ....................... ............mavrothis - 3-14-2006 at 08:07 AM
Hi,
On Greek bouzouki you can't really play the Eastern makams, only tempered versions of them. If you really want to be able to play the microtonal
notes I'd suggest sticking to an Arabic buzuk, Turkish/Iranian saz/tambur, or Greek bulgari. The Greek bouzouki has a great sound but is very
specific and tempered.
By the way, I am coming to Dubai for about 5 days for a concert at the end of April, any chance you might want to meet for a coffee?
Sincerely,

Here is a Grrek Bouzouki that i bought from Greece. I had them install a Savvas pickup. I like it it is made by SAKIS very simple but nice. I am
hunting for a real nice one. But it takes 3 to 4 months to order from Greece.

hi guys,
Thank you for sharing your experience with me. i heard some greece music and it is sound close to arabic music, so i thought that you place
the metalic frets to suit the "Micro-tunes" which are used in arabic makams.
Nice pictuces and winderfull bouzouki. Definitly i will get one. but what i liked more is your "Cats" pictures, they look really cute
...........
Mavrothis, it sounds great, i will invite for a coffee and i would love to attend your Concert. but can you tell me more about it please? Place?time?

Above is a link to a concert in NYC last fall. We've added a few new songs, but basically the repertoire is comprised of older Iranian pop songs and
folk songs that we have arranged. I personally focus on other types of music, like Greek and Ottoman music, but this is definitelly interesting and
has given me the opportunity to play in some very nice places (like the upcoming Dubai trip).
I will be in Dubai from April 25th to April 30th, and would love to meet up if possible. See you then!

And here is a new Bouzouki made by an old guy who used to play in Port Of Athens , In Studio City California , His name is Alex Sioris who owns a
store of musical instruments in Los Angeles, Ca. His web site is http://www.marinamusicla.com he is a very nice decent man to deal with. I first saw him playing at the Port of Athens in 1985 while my friend
Nickos Amariasnos was singing there.dubai244 - 3-15-2006 at 08:07 PM
