For you experts out there (Samir N I know you play), explain the light in the drum. Just for effect, or does it keep the skin tight?

Thanks for the videos. I have a few friends that play with more then one derbake like that but it takes enormous skill to separate the hands.
The light is to keep the skin tight because they are using a real skin and not a plastic one. There is a maker named Kevork in lebanon that now makes
a professional derbake that features the possibility to interchange between synthetic heads and natural skin. They are about 1000$ but Iam shure they
are worth it.

Certainly some fantastic playing there, but am I the only one that found his head movements and facial expressions incredibly pretentious and
irritating?

I must agree with you...But If you knew derbake players in arabic and turkish bands it wouldnt shock you as much... in general they are pretentious
and full of themselves.
Iam talking about the small time guys who play at weddings to the professionals playing with superstars. They have that same general attitude. Its
verry much the public;s fault for giving them soo much attention. Also the derbake is probably the most played instrument in all the middle east and
the diaspora abroad. Its the first thing to come out at parties because people want to dance. Therefore if someone plays it well he becomes the star
of the night. Since soo many people can play then Its almost like every derbake player is in a competition with one another.
For this video.... I think he<s just young and verry influenced by the rap and hip-hop culture wich encourages a big ego.

Amazing, the guy's got fantastic tone along with blazing speed. He's one of the quickest hand drummers I've ever heard. Now that he's got all the
chops any percussionist needs -- I hope he works on being more musical -- if he did that -- forget it !! Thanks again for the great videos.
