Foad Jihad Oud Advice

Jeff - 7-23-2006 at 07:42 AM

Hey I am deployed to Iraq, and have the opportunity to buy an oud from a local...what is a fair price to pay for a new Foad Jihad oud...I suppose it is from his shop...it has the FOAD stamp on the bottom. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jeff,
Can you provide more details, pics, etc?
The info you provided is not adequate.
There is a lot of fake copies out there.
Here is a link to Foad Jihad's ouds. I hope this might help you a little:

I hope you make it home safe.

One piece of advice for you. I have owned two ouds by Fou'ad Jihad. The bracing underneath the floating bridge, on both ouds, is not sufficient for the pressure of the bridge against the face of the oud, and the result is the gradual appearance of a crack on the face, beginning at the bridge.
This is not difficult to fix, but you should be aware of this if it is worrisome to you. Given that, the Fou'ad Jihad oud that I now play is probably the most beautiful sounding instrument I have owned ( and I have owned ouds by Manol, Hanna Nahhat, and Abdo Nahhat).

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am making an attempt to post some pictures of the oud...we'll see how it goes.

P.S. 18 more days and I'll be back in the US!

Its a real one if you were woried about that, and the wood is beutifull by the way.
The problem described by Stephen about the bracing being too light on the face and eventualy cracks the face is true for there models with a floating brige. The face should be able to handle this type of pull and be fine. And I personaly heard a foad oud that had a fixed brige and I prefered it sound wise to the floating brige.
Have fun with the oud.

Yeah the back of the oud looks beautiful. How much is it being offered to you for Jeff?

Jeff - 7-28-2006 at 12:19 PM

I ended up buying the OUD for $400.00. I am extreamly happy with it...now I need to learn how to play it! I would welcome any advice for a guitarist who is transitioning to an Oud.
I appreciate all the advice and help that was offered on this matter. Thanks guys!

I don't know what those woods are, but that bowl looks like a piece of candy. Very pretty.

SamirCanada - 7-28-2006 at 09:30 PM

It think its Rosewood + teak + mohagany.
could be wrong but that's my guess.

Wow an amazing price. Wanna bring another back to the USA? :)
