Arabic musical notation

Masel - 9-1-2006 at 09:42 AM

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know of a webpage that explains and shows what arabic musical notation looks like? I'm not really interested in learning how to read it particularly, but I remember seeing it before I knew how to read western sheet-music and now I would like to compare.

Well, it's the same, isn't it? Just a little addition of half flat & half sharp signs where needed? ;)
Somebody knows some other arabic notation? I have never seen different arabic notation system. I would like to know something about that system.

But the notes are the same.

I though there was an entirely different notation that came before the western version. Does it actually come from arabic music or was arabic music usually not written (it makes sense that it was though)...

Thanks.

Arabic music wasn't written, though I believe Turkish music had a system of notation prior to their adoption of the western system (though whether it predates or was merely concurrent with the western, I couldn't say). Maybe one of the Turkish music scholars has more information . . . ?
