I'm thinking of getting this oud

This oud has a 61cm string length. Can I tune it EABEAD if I use turkish tuning or low tension strings?

I should say that this may or not be temporary depending on the tension of the strings. I have a recital coming up and would like to be able to use the tuning that I have been practicing the pieces in if I decide to use the Sukar.

Hi Jason,

As none of the experts have responded, I will jump in with my .02c worth.

As you know, it is not good practice to tune an Arabic oud to Turkish tuning for reasons of the extra tension.
However, if you choose the string gauges carefully to ensure they will exert the same, or less tension as that exerted by an Arabic stringset tuned to Arabic tuning, there should be no danger.

There is also the consideration that ouds should be designed to work best with the frequencies (tuning) they are designed for. So the tonal result may not be optimal.

Regards,

Greg

Thanks for the help Greg. I really like the looks of this oud but I am starting to wonder if I would be better off sticking with an instrument with 58.5cm string length.

Hi Jason,
I have a Sukar oud arabic size, and I suggest you not to try hi tensions on this oud. I've tried once and I had cracks on the top in return...:(
Expecially if it's brand new, use Aquila strings on it with the arabic tuning (I suggest you to try the turkish set and tune it one step down, or the new arabic low tension set they have).
I'm sure you'll love it 'cause it sounds gorgeous this way. Welcome in the Sukar's club...
Ciao ciao, Giuseppe.
