Hello folks
Any advice for toning down my squeeky fingers when playing mainly on the wound strings. Is there anything you can apply to them that will not stain
or damage the strings and fretboard?
A bizarre question but I bet I'm not the only one.
Have a good day

How old are the strings? Mine usually mellow out after a few weeks and dont' squeak as much
squeeky revisited

Hello Jason - the strings are new on, but I was a bit squeeky before aswell.
I have to say I was listening to Udi Hrant in the car today and turned up the sound and he was squeeking like mad so I'm in good company - in fact my
squeeks were of comparable quality to his, just a bit of difference in the playing.
I think you can get a spray for guitar strings but I have never used it.
Cheers

What a great question? This drives me crazy too for both new and older strings. I see great oud players doing glisandos and vibratos like mad with
no squeaks and wonder just how they do it.
Leon, why do you think if there is a spray for guitar it might damange or not work for oud strings? Wound strings are wound strings, one would think,
no? I will see if they have such a thing at the Guitar Center and will buy and try it.

you know, I think part of the squeaking is natural- no matter what you do- I dont think they make flat-wound strings for oud... but I think part of
the reason you dont hear the squeaking on recordings so much is that they are recorded using uni-directional mics that are not focused on the neck.
Ive heard squeaking or "scratching" on Munir Bashir recordings, and I heard he would use a pick-up and a mic at the same time to acheive optimal
recording quality... If someone can certify that, maybe it would help...
I kind of like it- Its very "human" you know?

More mouse than human

You're right it is only human, I'm certainly not after perfextion but it does seem particularly loud on the oud compared with my steel string guitar.
I shall experiment - I would not want to get rid of it altogether - that would be callous.
Maybe I have a mouse in the oud!
