Ammar el Sherei

SamirCanada - 10-17-2006 at 08:06 AM

Hi guys. I was watching Sahrah el Sherei last nite on Art...
And I my father told me he was a great oudist. I have never heard anything from him before I started watching his show. He usualy has pretty good musicians come in but I didnt know he was one.
Does anyone have a mp3 or something of him so that I can listen to him. Or if you have more info on him it would be apreciated.

Also Did anyone catch Naseer Shamma's interview on Masria just after the Sherei show... he played really beutifully and his yaroub oud is just amazing. Especialy with that wound gg course it ads a lot of character.

This is an article in arabic about him.

http://www.rezgar.com/debat/show.art.asp?aid=42343

Surprisingly, there aren't that many articles discussing him in the internet. I'd imagine there might be more detailed discussions about him hidden inside some forum or another. (Zeryab, maybe)

He's been around for a good time now. I think I can count at least 5 TV series and 1 movie where he made the music. I'm not familiar with his work beyond drama, but I do believe that in the seventees he made some music for this one band that had alaa abdel khale' in it, before alaa gone on about his way.

I think at one time, too, he was famous for making all sorts of renditions for songs made by other people like Halim, Farid, Shadya, etc. Don't remember what they sounded like - I was a toddler then - but the people's impression of them were good.

I think I have four cassettes of his music for TV. I just have to look for them. If you want, I can send them over. (I'm still trying to figure how to digitize them.)

For oud, there is a certain composition in his music for the series arabesque, where I think two ouds are used. (The very recording could have been made in tracks, of course.) It's quite a piece. I've read somewhere that he played on oud in a recent music festival. It would be very interesting to hear him play his music on oud.

And I think I passed by his studio once. I discovered by mistake. It was in one of the alleys about Sheraton and Pyramisa hotels in Cairo.

Best of luck,
Hamid

Thanks Hamid. If you cant digitize them you know you are about an hour drive from me. So we could always have an oud evening if your interested.

I think is his show is enjoying quite a bit of popularity right now... Its pretty interesting during ramadan he has really traditional egyptian folk musicians come in. I saw this one guy playing rababa with the skill of a trained classical musician but he was a galabeya Saeidy style.

Ah. Rababa. My day dreams are filled with me playing that instrument. As if.

Well, I've been putting off coming up there for a while because I was hoping I'd be finishing with this thesis thing. But it's not coming through. Perhaps I'll have to make the trip to break the charm. (Wishful me).

Needless to say, you're welcome to come here any time. It would be a great pleasure having you here.

Meanwhile, I might make a run downtown to get one 1/8 connection to hook my player to the laptop, and try digitizing over audacity. I read some where on the forum that that's the way to go.

Make shure you use a record out... and not a master out that has been amplified and make shure you put it in your line in....
or your soundcard can go boom!

Keep in touch and let me know when your free so we can hang out.

Here is a try in digitizing from a cassette. I'm not sure I was able to capture the song correctly, though.

The thing is, I'm not quite sure how to rectify the file.

Will keep trying.

Meanwhile, hope you like it.

I just realized that this might be an oud piece at all .. :-)

Clumsy me!
