This is not a real Nahat! This is a cheap copy. I have seen many fake ouds sold by the same guy on ebay. What a shame! After the Fadel fakes now we

Thanks for letting us know Hosam. Can you enlighten us on how to spot a fake Nahat? Basically, how can you tell that its a real Nahat?

It seems like the oud is a reconstruction using real old nahat parts, like the rosette and the bowl. And even the bowl, if fm 1913, seems to be in a
too good condition to be real or at least already repaired several times.
The soundboard looks also quite new to be real origin, and f the braces have been also changed then the real nahat sound dissappears.
The pegbox is very raw style, does not seems a refined style like nahat craftmanship should be. And the pegs are for sure not origin ones and needs to
be replaced or recalibrated.
I do not really know how are nahats, as have not seen many, but in view of their reputation i do not think that this kind of fretted masteel could be
a nahat one.
Well it seems that only the rosette be original.
But these are just supputations and elucubrations fm a clumsy amateur totally unskilled on real luthier's technical advises.Hosam - 11-19-2006 at 09:18 AM

Zalzal pretty much summarized the clues. The craftsmanship is too crude for a Nahat including the rosette. The label is clearly a fake. Here is a Hana

If this eBay seller has a long history of selling fake instruments, he must lead a charmed life.
It is not easy to get an eBay feedback score: 437 with 100% of it positive.
One would think this could not be so, if every previous buyer was not completely convinced that he/she had purchased the real thing.
I am not claiming that this instrument is a real Nahat, but the evidence provided on this thread so far has not convinced me one way or the other.
Perhaps the good Doctor would offer his view.

the problem is that i was in syria and every oudmaker will say to you that he is the best and that he have a reel nahat to sell, we must be an
experienced oudplayer to know wich is a reel nahat and wich is a fake even some buyers can make a mistake, after all this oud can be an exellent oud

I just want to give my opinion on this, When someone is looking to put money towards an old oud like a nahat even before having heard it... its
obvious the reason why. Because its a Nahat. So the main attracting factor is that the person wants a nahat not because of its potential sound but
because its an original oud made by the same hands that made the ouds for many famous classical oudists.
So Nasir, if you know that it has been worked on or modified then its important that you say so. I know for a fact that I have seen another oud you
were selling and you stated on ebay that the oud was modified and repaired by such and such. wich is a verry honest and professional thing to do.
Obviously no one can expect that all Nahats have remained in intact origninal condition and repairs are eventually the only option. But that is what
makes the difference between selling it for a couple hundred dollars or thousands.

i agree with nasir,
evry oudmaker of nahat family made ouds of many sises even small oud, i have an anton nahat (a small and simple one) antun nahat is not as known as
the others but the sound is great and similar to a nahat (very bassy and deap), but in our days, we have to admit that its difficult to buy a nahat
without knoledge and specially a sound clip, deffinitly for me its an original bowl, an original pegbox and some original pegs and if its good sound
