Can anyone post some files for Simon Shaheen? My parents were watching the satellite yesterday, and I ran downstairs when I heard this great oud
player. When they showed his face, I yelled out "Simon Shaheen!" I know what he looks from his site, but I haven't heard many clips of
him. Can anyone post anything for him?
TP21
P.S. Mr. Parfitt, I heard the Longa farahfaza (Sunbati) by Shaheen from your site, and I gotta thank you for that. Excellent, man!Jameel - 1-31-2004 at 04:50 PM
TP21,
Don't you have Taqasim with Shaheen and Racy? I post a couple clips later. Its a great CD.
Meanwhile here is a taqasim from his Retreat, during a performance of Dhykryati by Qasabji.
Great stuff there Jameel!I heard Simon Shaheen play an opening Oud Taksim for one of Lenny Kravitz song (something about peace i think) Does anyone
here happen to have that clips?
Many Thanks in advance!
Regards

Hey guys,
Awesome job Jameel! Even without the buzoq parts, it seems like it's one flowing taqsim. I can't believe I have never had Simon's
taqsims featured before. He is long overdue. TP, look for a few files on the next MP3 update.
MikeTruePharaoh21 - 1-31-2004 at 10:21 PM
That song with Lenny Kravitz is called "We Want Peace," and it can be downloaded free here:
The intro in the beginning is only a few seconds long, but the fact that it's even there is great. If I'm not mistaken, around the middle of
the second minute, Kazem el-Saher has a short piece. (2:17) If anyone can confirm this, go for it.
TP21
P.S. I've heard Kazem plays some oud. Anyone have any clips?TruePharaoh21 - 1-31-2004 at 11:00 PM
Jameel, I totally forgot to comment on the pieces. Thanks so much for posting them! The taqasim one was great. Do you have him playing Zekrayati, by
any chance? I've been looking around for a recording of it. If not, I guess I'll start another post and draw peoples attention to it. If you
do, I'd appreciate it very very very much.

Hi TP
I would recommended getting a copy of the CD 'Turath: Masterworks of the Middle East' by Simon Shaheen (which includes the Longa Farahfaza)
, if you don't have it already. I think it was rereleased recently - I'm pretty sure I got my copy from Amazon, so it shouldn't be too
hard to find.
By the way, does anyone know when (or if) Simon Shaheen is planning to publish his oud method? It's apparently been in the pipeline for a while
now. I spoke to him very briefly at the Thessaloniki oud meeting, and he promised that his next CD would be a solo oud one, so we've got
something to look forward to there!
All the best
David
P.S. If anyone has any more recordings from Shaheen's retreats it would be great to hear them!

Dear friends.
I have the two cd's [ AL QANTARA and the other with taksim with the bouzouk player]
But I really believe that Simon on the album Al Qantara shows that he is a great virtuoso on the oud and the violin as well.....
Also I can asure you that he is a wonderfull person.....
We are proud to say that one of his students,a Greek person is here in Greece and he is very good too....
I really like his playing very much...
Regards and respect

Brian....killer taqsim man. Thanks for sharing that with all of us. Simon Shaheen is truly a GREAT oud player. That taqsim was so
full of tarab, it was amazing.

If you liked that, I should post the rest of the file . . . it was an introduction to a duet with Rima Khcheich, who is an absolutely amazing
singer.
I have a whole bunch of other stuff, but it's all on MDs. I'll try to make some MP3s of them and post. I wasn't sure how much
bandwidth use Mike can deal with, and don't want to overdo it.
Re: turath, it was recently reissued. It is really great.
Unfortunately, his CD "the music of mohamed abdel wahab" is still out of print. It is unbelievable, although he doesn't have a whole
lot of oud features.
Another great CD is "Saltanah" by Simon and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (the indian slide guitar player). It's a similar concept to
"Taqasim", but involves related maqamat/ragas.
Re: his method book . . . it's been in the works for a while, but honestly he's so busy that I don't see it coming out any time soon.
He is the most amazing teacher I've ever met, and is so logical, thorough and systematic that it's ridiculous. I think it will be like
nothing ever published on oud method and arabic music.Jameel - 2-1-2004 at 02:39 PM
Hi Brian,
We've exchanged a couple emails. Nice to see you at this forum (the best one for oud, period). PLEASE post the rest of the file. I would be more
than happy to host some of the material you have if want to e-mail the files to me, if you are willing. I think I'll post up some of Najib's
playing that I recorded when he made a short visit to my home a couple years ago. Keep it coming, my friend.
Oh, by the way, please also post some of your own playing. Any student of Simon is bound to have something great to offer!

Okay I figured out that the files too big for the message board, so here's a link to it on my website: simon-rima.mp3David Parfitt - 2-2-2004 at 02:47 AM
Hi Brian
That was a great file of the vocal/oud duet - do you know the title of the song by any chance?
Look forward to hearing more files from Simon or Najib Shaheen!
Best wishes

Yeah, thanks for that file. It is really beautiful.

Unfortunately, I don't know the title of the song. I'll ask Simon or Najib next time I see one of them.
By the way, that was Simon singing, too . . .
min elli qal
oudman - 2-2-2004 at 02:30 PM
thats oum kalthoums song "min elli qal" composed by zakaria ahmad. the song (and taqasim) is rast by the way. just sounds like simon tuned
his oud a half note down, so rast on G, becomes rast on F#. thanks for the clip, sounds great.Brian Prunka - 2-2-2004 at 03:02 PM
You're right, I guess I wasn't listening too closely . . .
I think what actually is going on is the his oud is tuned UP, and it's rast on F.
Thanks for the title.

First, thanks Brian for a great song. It is too bad that Simon does not have more recordings like this. His Abdel Wahab album is my all-time favorite
by him, then Taqasim. Wouldn't it be great if he made some more classic recordings?? Please post more of what you have
Second, here are a couple clips for Simon's brother, Najib. I made these recordings when Najib visited my family a couple years ago.
Thanks for posting these files for us all - do you have any more interesting oud recordings like these? (not necessarily of the Shaheens)
Best wishes
David
P.S. I would definitely recommend to anyone that they try and find the 'Saltanah' album by Simon Shaheen - I think it has to be my favourite
of his.nadir - 2-3-2004 at 01:13 AM
isnt the flame album good as well??TruePharaoh21 - 2-3-2004 at 11:13 AM
For everyone living in Southern California that checks this post, we're in for a big treat. Simon Shaheen is coming to UCLA on March 9th for a
concert here, and on March 11 will be at Santa Barbara (UCSB). For more details, check out his site. I'm totally excited about this. I'm
about 200 yards away from where the performance is gonna be, and I know it's gonna be an awesome one.
TP21Jameel - 2-3-2004 at 11:45 AM
That's great, TP21. I'm glad for you.
Why is it that Chicago gets overlooked for performances? I think Simon has been there once. And that for Blue Flame type music, not traditional stuff.
It is dying out I'm afraid....nadir - 2-3-2004 at 12:16 PM
how often does simon shaheen play in concerts?? wasn't he out for a while?TruePharaoh21 - 2-3-2004 at 12:23 PM
I take it back. No concerts on those days. Apparently, the dates were for 2003, and I haven't grown accustomed to the change yet. Oh well.
Hopefully something will develop soon enough.
TP21nadir - 2-3-2004 at 12:40 PM
i hope something develops pretty quickly, you seemed to ecstatic when you thought he was coming!
all the best.

Sorry, David. I don't have much. Most of what I do have I have posted here. See my new topic though for some taqasim I am trying to identify.

Here's an mp3 of Simon playing Sama'i Rast, by Tatyos Efendi.
