I really like the sound of my oud, but I would like it to have a bit less brightness and some more bass, the real "arabic" sound if you know what I
mean that is a bit dull even, which my oud doesn't exactly have.
I tried tuning down half a step, but not so practical for playing with other people. What strings could I use? I switched to a better plectrum that I
made, softer and more flexible.
Thanks/

May be a good luthier can change the inner bracing under the soundboard to get more bassy sounding.
This post could be better on avice, tips and question section of the forums.

for more bass you need to change your top wood and brace system.
for example cedar have darker sound than spruce.
ther is allso guitar with wallnut top(martin guitar).
good luck.

Hi Masel,
You might want to start looking for another oud that has the tonal balance you like. If there's an oudmaker who's work you know, then having the top
changed might be an option -- but when it's done, you essentially have a new oud that's going to take time to settle in, and you might not like the
results.
Also, unless you absolutely love everything else about your oud except the bass, then it's worth looking into getting the top changed out, otherwise
start looking for another oud.
As far as picks go, I've found a stiffer pick produces a darker sound, with less "twang" in the highs, but still it's no substitute for an oud with
great bass response, and you have to deal with the adjusting to the new pick. Take care and good luck on your search.
