If anyone is going to the Reading or Basingstoke gig it would be great to meet up before - I am down in Portsmouth so these are nearest to me.

Hi Leon,

Thanks very much brother for the info, I would love to meet but unfortunatley as I am further to the North from where you are, I will go to the one in Melton Keynes.

I'm sure it will be a great gig, I would have missed the oportunity if I didn't see your post so again thank you and keep us updated with oud related stuff in the UK.

Best regards to you and all

Just saw Adel and his wife last night in Edinburgh. He is a stunning player of great virtuosity, and very soulful too. I loved his wife's singing, although she got lost a few times when playing tambourine. I can't blame her though, as Adel would weave polyrhythms around her at great speed, with accents rarely on the beat, heavy in syncopation.

They seemed an amiable couple, but it is really Adel's show. At one point his wife laughingly complained that she didn't know what he was playing. He would launch off into fast and furious taksims or dance improvisations without warning. I've never seen a voice/lute or oud or guitar duo, where the singer was clearely there as a side show - not even as an accompanist to the oudi.

Some of his modulations were brilliant, but I have to say my overall impression was that it was all too much. The relentless barrage of tremolos and super-fast scales just became a blur for my ears (and eyes), and I was left wishing he had taken more time, more space. But many people seem to love this super-fast stuff, and I am getting on in years (47), so my comments are not criticism. Many people will love it.

Despite my reservations, I'm really looking forward to his workshop today. He is obviously a master of the oud and its music. Unfortunately, I only have an oud at Turkish pitch, which would not drop a tone without the strings rattling off the fingerboard. I'll let you know how I get on.

Workshop

The workshop was great - very demanding, and, yes, seemingly endless hours of tremolos! At one point we tried improvising to a set rhythm: 3+2+2+3 - very difficult for me to do. Enjoyable, though.
