floating bridge project

Lazzaro - 4-11-2007 at 01:28 AM

Finally the last month a friend of mine started to make for me a floating bridge oud inspirated by some measurement taken from a Fadel copy.
The wood used for this instruments is 23 old Indian rosewood and first quality "maschiato" Italian spruce from Val di Fiemme, the inside of neck and pegbox is maple.
In the first attachment you will find a picture of my first notes

Nice work by your friend Lazarro. Nice wood too. Is your friend normally a lute-maker?

SamirCanada - 4-11-2007 at 12:32 PM

Nice looking work so far... congradulations on this project its looking really good.

paulO - 4-11-2007 at 09:03 PM

The wood for the back is beautiful..that's some really choice Indian Rosewood; not just some overly dark and boring stuff -- it's got some grain going on dude !! Can't wait to see more of this project. Thanks for chronicles Lazzaro.

Cheers..PaulO

My friend Agostino

Lazzaro - 4-14-2007 at 03:13 PM

Hi friends, I and my friend Agostino are very happy for your words. Agostino is a amatorial liuther, he made mostly violins, violas and cellos. He made also guitars and after having known me two years ago he started making ouds too, this is the fourth he made since then.
In the attachment will find a pictures of the third one with hand made pegs.
Sincerely Maurizio

Come bello!

This is a beautiful looking oud - and a touch of things Italian always goes down well ;). I especially like what is looking like a wide(r) fingerboard. To me this is looking as fine as something from Yaroub's workshop. Can't wait to hear it....

tomorrow I try with a pyramid lute set

Hey Lazzaro, your oud is looking very nice.
What type of wood did you use for the bridge?
thanks

bridge wood

Lazzaro - 5-13-2007 at 03:49 PM

I use a very old piece of rosewood, but I not sure is the right wood. Probably is better a lighter wood as walnut. Today I have played for the first time, the sound in my opinion is very good, powerfull and rich.
Sincerely Maurizio

peppeo77 - 5-13-2007 at 10:24 PM

Very nice looking oud I would say!
Bella Maurizio! Per favore, dimmi quando te lo porti a casa così mi fai provare questo nuovo arrivato...un abbraccio, Peppeo.
p.s. non è che per lo Shehata ci hai ripensato vero?

NICE!

ready for finishing

Lazzaro - 5-15-2007 at 02:11 AM

For finishing we are going to use a waterbase finish from Luthiers Mercantile International, a web shop I've found in link page of Jameel site.
Thank you Jameel for the information you share with us.
Sincerely Maurizio

the first concert with the floating bridge

Lazzaro - 6-4-2007 at 02:54 PM

When the oud is not completely finish I made a concert with it. I have played in cultural centre for traditional popular misic named "Circolo Gianni Bosio" in Rome with my friends Massimo Nardi -a very good guitarist-. Massimo played with a little amplification and me totally acoustic. I fell this oud powerfull and bright.
sincerely Maurizio

Nicola - 6-4-2007 at 11:40 PM

Ciao Lazzaro
Magnifico lavoro!!!!
Suono profondo e brillante....
potresti inviare un file di solo oud?
Wonderfull Job
Deep and bright sound
Would you send a File of just oud?
Nicola

Matthias - 6-6-2007 at 11:53 AM

hello Maurizio,

thanks for the sound clip. It sounds interesting. but in my ears the guitar is a bit dominating. So my question is, if you can upload some time a solo piece. That would be very fine.

By the way, if you want to listen to my floating bridge oud, you will find it on my website. It's made after the instrument Naseer Shamma actually plays. I have measured his instrument some time ago and made meanwhile a "copy" of it. You will find the link here:

Best regards
Matthias

Lazzaro - 6-21-2007 at 12:49 PM

My friend Agostino has been busy all week long and the soundbord warnish is not complete but I recorded something for you to listen the sound of my new oud.
I recorded with a good condenser microphone without effect, compression and equalization.
Please forgive me for my european music stile.

Hi Lazzaro,

I got question regarding the finger board. What did you use to smoothen the fingerboard, i mean of course you use Sand Paper, but can you use sanding machin to do the job?

I got oud with new finger board, some body put it for me, but he missed up the action height, so it is too buzzy because the strings touching the finger board when it is viberate. i am windering if i can use sanding machin to sand the finger board?!

Thanks in advance, Lazzaro. you did exellent job in the your project. i might start order ouds from you.

Cheers

;)

SamirCanada - 8-21-2007 at 10:39 AM

its better to use a sanding block. like a tool to hold the sand paper flat while you sand. Because with a sanding machine its easy to take off too much.

dubai244 - 8-21-2007 at 09:30 PM

Hi Samir,

I have seen sanding Block techniq, it takes long time to do the job but it is more accurate.

I bought a sanding machine, but it is not that stronge, it seem to me it works very well. But any way i dont have much experience in wood works, but i am learning.

Any way, is there any formula that calcute the action height and slope of the strings from the bridge to the nut?!.
I have got oud, that has high fingerboard, and it is too buzzy, the strings touch the finger board when it is vibrating.

thanks for your help guys

Cheers

:)

Lazzaro - 8-22-2007 at 02:34 PM

My friend Agostine use a marble sanding block. Thank for your words, I love this instrument very much. Hear from you soon ciao Maurizio

paulO - 8-22-2007 at 03:53 PM

Hi Lazzaro,

The oud sounds great, and is beautifully crafted. The understated rich look of the back, the (maple ?) lined pegbox, the cool binding on the soundholes, and the great looking mizraplek. Wow! Enjoy it in good health.

Cheers...Paul
