Hello everybody
I have a seond chance offer on this Mohamed Kalifa oud (syrian) for 170 US$ (with shipping), is it worth it? Many on the board dont think they are
good ouds, but at that price is it ok? I;ll be in Cairo in a month and that opens many opportunities as well (I'm really new to Oudism)
Thanks

Hey nayoud, you will need to make sure that this second chance offer is really from ebay. Too many scams and phishing for ebay users.
If you are going to Cairo the chance that you will find a wider selection of ouds that you can inspect and try before you buy. Expect to pay more than
$170! I think it is worth it.

Thanks Hosam
So you think I should go to Mohamed Ali street in Cairo and do the shopping there right? are you familiar with the scene in Cairo? any particular oud
makers in mind?
Thanks for your help
Hisham

I have been to Mohamed Ali Street once that was back in 2000. I am not sure how things have changed since then. Do a search on the forums you will
find more information for oud shopping in Cairo. Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend anything syrian unless you're dealing directly with the maker. The place is full of DELETED BY
WEBMASTER - some of whom have tried their luck here. Khalifeh ouds are generally useless these days - unless they date from the mid eighties
and back. Ive seen a couple of decent looking Khalifeh ouds, but as to sound and playability I can't comment. Egypt would be your best bet. Good
luck

Ibrahim Sukkar and his brother, Naeem make very fine ouds. I'm sure there are many more excellent makers in Syria!

Isn't Samir Azar in Syria too?
Mike - 6-1-2007 at 12:11 PM
That's right Brian. Forgot about that. His ouds are excellent for the price.

Guys guys guys.... No mistery, its the former Melbourne, reregistered as I have no intention of abandoning this small community. Had you read
between the lines you would've realised that Samir Azar and the Sukkar brothers fall under the "dealing directly with the maker" category. My strong words, I agree, are a result of personal experience and
disappointment.... Let's consider this topic closed.......
cheers.

why did you re-register? you were not banned...

Hey Mike I thought I was. But I just realised I wasn't . Sorry....
Well Melbourne it is then!

i've got one ... a couple of years ago my wife bought it as a xmas present. she won't tell me how much she paid for it but i paid a local luthier
EUR300 to make it right ... what a bargain! (sarcasm alert!)
it plays fine - now ... i don't know what wizardry he performed but it's a comfortable; easy to play with good projection - my "piazza" oud.
