New Samir Azar 8 string oud

zoukboy - 11-4-2007 at 09:57 AM

Here are a couple of photos of my new 8 string oud by Samir Azar. This is the first 8 string that Samir has made and I am the lucky recipient.

I tune it from low to high:

A1 D2 A2 D3 G3 C4 F4 Bb4

It sounds fantastic!

Can't wait fro a sound sample – Samir made my 7 course oud and its one of my favorite instruments!

I'm curious – what are the two little rings on the treble strings just behind the bridge?

That looks fantastic... I've always loved Samir's work

They're small rubber "O" rings. I put them there to dampen the sympathetic vibrations of the two highest courses behind the bridge. It's a technique sometimes used on mandolins. I was getting a little wolf tone from those.

48mm. It's really comfortable to play and I'm really enjoying the shorter 57cm scale after several years with a 60.4cm scale 6 string. It's much easier for me to play in tune.

The low A is the same as the A string on a bass and the high Bb is a 4th above the usual highest F string of the higher Arabic tuning, so the range is phenomenal. It's bright and crisp without sounding thin and it's very, very responsive. I also like that with the floating bridge the strings are higher off the soundboard as I have a tendency to dig in.
