Anyone has heard this awesome CD? What are your thoughts on it? I think almost all the tracks are so beautiful, and it seems to build on intensity and complexity as the cd progresses, no? track 14 is awesome!
Anyone knows which type of lauto is being playedd on that cd?? Since I heard it, all I'm thinking is going back to Greece to get THAT specific instrument!

No one has any info on that?

Hi

I have the CD, which I bought in Greece. I'm not sure why you are asking about the type of lauto being played though, as there are numerous pictures of it in the CD booklet.

Best wishes

David

Hi all,
I have the volume n°7, "outi" (oud), which is quite great..

Yassas Fellow Oud Freaks,

There are two "traditional Greek instruments" series that are available in Greece. (I have the lauto recording from the "tan" label series, but was not especially impressed with the recordings.)

Here is the outi (oud) recording from each series:

"Tan" label: http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000hbp
"Green" label: http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000a3g

Here are the lauto recordings:

Tan: http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000arp
Green: http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000a3h

The "green label" series has a kanonaki (qanoun) recording that is an absolute killer. The performer is a Greek Orthodox priest! (couldn't find the CD on Studio 52's web catalogue)

BTW, Studio 52 in Thessaloniki is the probably the best CD shop in all of Greece, especially for traditional music.

Hopefully, you can use the CD booklet info to find out more about the lauto played.

Good luck,
John

John,

Do you know if there are different tracks on the two oud CDs, or if one was just reissued on a different label?

Best wishes

David

Hi David,

I only the own the "tan" label outi (oud) CD, but I am 99% sure that these are 2 completely different series.

I might have both kanonaki (qanoun) recordings. If so, I'll confirm that they are different ones and get back to you.

Peace,
John

Hi,

The OYTI (OUD) CDs of the two series are different. One is only with Antonis Apergis, the other is with both Apergis and Haig Yazdjan. Both are wonderful, and though I bought them many years ago I still listen to them often.

I wish I was more familiar with laouto, I would be able to discern for the original question in this thread. It should be easy enough to find info on the main types of Greek laouto online with a google search. Basically there is the Cretan, the Mainland, and the Island types, which have different tunings and bodies, but are basically the same. I think there is less real difference between the laouto types then there are between the Arabic and non-Arabic ouds. Regional playing style is very important though, which I suspect may not come through in the instrumental CD's.

It's very nice that these series of albums have been made. It showcases many instruments and players who otherwise might not have an opportunity to record solo tracks like these.

I also agree that Studio52 in Thessaloniki is a really great store with a great selection.

Take care,

mavrothis

Wow, thanks for all the reply, I will definitely order some cd's from studio52 (I'm in Canada by the way)!!
As for finding the info in the CD booklet, well that CD was burned for me by a Greek friend in London so obviously it didn't have the booklet...but that studio 52 shop seems to have all kind of crazy recordings which I shall get my hands on!
