A friend has offered an Oud to me for purchase.
His price is $400. it comes with a trapezoid hard case
and pick up is installed.
He said it is from Damascus.
I am very unfamiliar with these instruments so I need help.
He has let me take it for a couple of weeks to try. It is beautiful
and in pristine condition. My concerns are that I have seen Turkish
Ouds on the net for less and equal amounts. Also my hands are large
and the neck of this instrument tapers down quite a bit.
Are there other styles I should consider. Is this an instrument that will
not stand the ware of playing it seems so fragile. Even thou it is beautiful
where parts meet parts it is slightly not perfect.
It sounds ok nice deep tone but the high string tinks and I do not
seem to get any omph out of the highest tones. I understand this
could be normal. There is no buzzing.
I do not want to invest in an instrument that is not worth the time
I will have to put in to learn.
I don't mind spending more money for an instument that I will not
grow out of.
Am I getting a good deal? Should I explore a different style?
Advice would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Virginia

put pictures and more information on the maker of the oud.
you will be better guided that way.
How large are you hands? The oud is some what standard in terms of fingerboard width. you can find unusual and custom made ones out there which have
wider fingerboards.
But for most men there are no problems with playing.
The strings are supposed to be close enough to each other.
Also there are ouds for 300$ and there are ouds for 7000$ with the average oud of professional quality is about 1000$
So you can read the FAQ thread to cover a lot of information you need to know about ouds.
