So pleased to have received my new oud from Nazih Ghadban, it sounds delicious. Bowl, walnut. Fingerboard, rosewood. Face, cedar with beautiful roses. Will post pictures when my mate can help me do so ( I dont have a digi camera ). Since buying Ive heard it said that cedar is inferior to spruce as it does not keep its tone over time. Any comments? If true, how long have I got?. C x

Thanks Ab,kind of you. Its great to have a sound as good as I can hear on my cd,s. I made the decision to buy a high quality oud because in the end I would have probably spent the same on cheaper ouds, always looking for something better. Now I can relax into the music without feeling the need for a better instrument. Regards, C.

Congratulations! Cant wait to see it. As for your question about cedar, in speaking about this to a number of guitar builders and Nazih himself, I have found that everyone is in agreement that the cedar top instruments open up very quickly (the sound that is) while spruce takes longer to open up and might open up more over time. The notion that a piece of wood "loses its sound" over time is a myth, I believe. Many of the very best string instruments like Italian made contra basses are over 200 years old and still going strong!

Thanks for that Roy, Im aware that many fine makers, guitar, lute & oud, use cedar aswell as spruce, your discussions with makers are reassureing. I remember one luthier who claimed that instrument quality cedar is widely available and that instrument quality spruce is becoming harder to obtain. Interesting discussion/debate for makers. Regards, C.

Congratulations on your new oud by master Nazih. His ouds are excellent, may it bring you much happiness! I don't think you need to worry about the ceder top losing any sound quality in your lifetime!;)
looking forward to the pics- best wishes- mw
