Oud in Kuwait

chuckerbutty - 4-20-2004 at 07:15 AM

Hi folks

Does anybody know a good place or area to look for ouds (new, old, good, bad, whatever) in Kuwait? I only know Salmeen - is there anything else?

Cheers

Oud in Kuwait

There is - or was 6 years ago - an oudmaker in Fahaheel by the name of Rabi9a. I may be able to find out more, but his shop was in the basement of a shopping complex to the north of the main east-west street from the corniche. I may hava an address, but in storage...

Hi

Im sorry for asking..how to spell any number appears in an Arabic name or songs? For example the number 9 on Rabi9a.

Thank you for your help.

Sorry for the confusion: 9 is one of the many diverse ways of writing the letter 'ain. It's used quite a bit by western writers on Arabic dialects.

John

Thanks for that, John. Don't worry about the address if you don't have it to hand. I have a fairly good idea of where this place might be, and if I can't find it, I could always ask around.

Oud teachers

On that note, does anybody know any good oud teachers in Kuwait? I'm going to be there for a few weeks next month and I want to see whether I can sneak in a lesson or two.

Cheers

I've asked some people about the place in Fahaheel, and unfortunately it doesn't seem to exist any more. I checked out Salmeen last week, which seems to be the only oud shop in Kuwait now. The general impression is that oud is on its way out here, everybody is far too busy playing the keyboard and the guitar - what a shame.
