My restored Floating bridge oud.

SamirCanada - 8-26-2008 at 09:47 PM

This oud I got from Haluk Eraydin, god rest his soul.
The back was made by Haluk and is of Mohagany and Wenge.

Here is what I did to the oud.

Converted to a floating bridge oud.
Changed the top to a western red cedar one.
redid the bracing using plans for professional floating bridge ouds.
redid the side binding using my own design. using hard maple, indian rosewood and ebony.
Added a honduras rosewood fingerboard.
added a new pickguard made of figured Koa.
striped and refinished the back with a french polish technique.

I am asking for 700$
This is a nice sounding instrument that plays really well. I will make a sound sample on youtube shortly.
Anyone interested should email me at samir_nassif@hotmail.com

thank you.

Hi Samir

Lovely work and sounds warm and responsive. What strings/tuning are you using? Whats the binding around the sound hole?
I wish I was in the market for another oud coz I'd go for this one for sure!!

Best Regards

oh thank you Kelly for you nice words.
I learned so much from working on this oud.

the binding around the soundhole is a veneer strip of walnut, maple, walnut.

Hi Samir. Nice job. I also have an oud by Haluk, may he rest in peace, and like what you've done on yours. How did you do the bracing so the top can take the pressure from the floating bridge? Do you have any photos of the work in progress you can share? Thanks, MW

Hi Chris,
You should hear it live...it truly is a great instrument.

After some consideration,
I am willing to part with this oud for 500$ + shipping.

SamirCanada - 12-1-2008 at 08:13 AM

I need to make some room for other ouds and since its Christmas season I thought I would bring this oud back on top of the for sale list.

I am bringing it down to 350$+ shipping.

its a great intermediate level oud.

SamirCanada - 12-10-2008 at 10:39 AM

Sold!

It is my honor and delight to report that I am the new owner of this oud.

I needed an oud that could be tuned up to a Turkish tuning for an unusual experimental/fusion ensemble. This instrument was so unusual that I thought it would be an appropriate choice.

What I couldn’t have known, based on the YouTube clip, was how subtle and beautiful this oud sounds in real life.

Samir is only at the beginning of his journey as a luthier, but he has already achieved something amazing. The deep, sensitive, sad sound of this oud is clearly not just a random result, but an expression that survived the long, strange journey from a luthier’s heart to wood.

Samir’s label includes a touching tribute to Haluk. It is a precious instrument and I will treasure it.

My new problem is that the oud came with an Arabic string set, and I like it this way so much that I might never get around to trying a Turkish tuning on it. I might still need to find yet another oud for the project.
