Many thanks Michael for all the joy you are bringing into the world with these fine instruments.

DaveH - 9-28-2008 at 11:52 PM

Great job guys! It must have been a fantastic day and you even had the weather on your side. Great to see your ugly mugs and this selection of much more beautiful ouds. Looking at the photos and video feeling a bit melancholy, but hey, I had a great day too! I'll be there next time!

charlie oud - 9-29-2008 at 03:16 AM

My warmest regards to all who made this superb day happen, When is the next one?. I met such fine folk, enjoyed their playing. Lovely ouds and talk by Michael Mussa. Where is everyone??

Oh, look they having a lunch break :( have some cosidration guys I said I'm fasting

Ararat66 - 9-29-2008 at 04:33 AM

Hey Awad

Those ouds have nicked our seats, they didn't need us udis and decided to go solo :xtreme: good luck to them I say:rolleyes:

Thanks all of you for turning up and for a brilliant day and evening it was a real pleasure and also great fun. I know Awad has loads of footage so he has promised to edit a little:))

I really enjoyed seeing Owain, wonderful loose, raw and instinctive talent (in the best possible use of the term). I really enjoyed meeting Usta Michael Moussa, to see his wonderful ouds, hear how and why he makes them in this way and just to see the maker in a room full of his ouds was really moving.

I really enjoyed your playing Charlie, we were chatting about you later and singing your praises.

Too much to write and have missed out a lot but we HAVE to meet again now we have got to know each other a bit. Maybe we could agree on a song to learn and also bring one of our own along. It would be great to get feedback.

Smile and say 'OOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUD':airguitar:

Owain-Hawk - 9-29-2008 at 04:43 AM

Hey Leon, thanks for the kind words. I really enjoyed meeting Michael too, he's a really great guy and Oud player.

I like your idea to all learn a new song, I can't get myself to fully learn a song, but if everyone else was doing it I would! :airguitar:

Jameel - 9-29-2008 at 04:53 AM

Nice to see you all had a good time. Thanks for sharing. :airguitar:

abusin - 9-29-2008 at 05:00 AM

Owain-Hawk - 9-29-2008 at 05:05 AM

You promised everyone that you would edit our playing to make us all sound better. Keep the video but just play Sunbati or someone over the top.

Just kidding!! You were all amazing players, and I really learned a lot just by watching. :xtreme:

Ararat66 - 9-29-2008 at 06:09 AM

Owain is right, now we have met future meetings would really encourage us to develop a bit of a repetoire which I would certainly appreciate - I'd learn loads of stuff if I had these tangible goals.

Leon

Kelly - 9-29-2008 at 07:25 AM

Hi Leon, Glad you got back ok and thanks for your comments.

Anyone want to have a go at getting a list together?
I think one tune would have to be Nahwand Lunga its a good tune and there are different styles and approaches to it. and if Owain has got a Sunbati tune.....or a song by Fairuz or Wahab.

Thanks Awad for all your hard work with the pictur3es and sound.

Mike - 9-29-2008 at 07:52 AM

How cool is this!!! Looks like you chaps had a great time. It's events like this that make running this website so rewarding. To see all you guys coming together like this and enjoying each others company is so cool. I only wish I could have joined you! I'm at work now, but I can't wait to get home and check out this thread in more detail when I get home later today.

Kelly - 9-29-2008 at 09:25 AM

Mike. Thanks to you for giving us the opportunity in the first place to make something like this happen

Owain-Hawk - 9-29-2008 at 09:35 AM

I agree, if it wasn't for Mike, this couldn't have happened in the first place. Cheers Mike :).

Oud.Proff - 9-29-2008 at 10:44 AM

What a nice gathering, always great to see music bringing people closer to each other !

Great people, nice ouds and sweet playing..

jdowning - 9-29-2008 at 11:53 AM

Congratulations everyone. Keep up the good work.

Owain-Hawk - 9-29-2008 at 12:53 PM

Next time we all get together, I'll bring a Darbuka (don't have one but plan on buying one). Or sombody else could, either way, we could really get the atmosphere going with a bit of Oud and Darbuka, and Kelly, maybe you could do a bit on Violin/Kamanjah. :bounce:

I bet that would be really nice.

Kelly - 9-29-2008 at 01:02 PM

Yeah, that would be fun. I'll have to have to clean the moths from my fiddle tho' !

Owain-Hawk - 9-29-2008 at 01:04 PM

I was actually suprised nobody brought a Darbuka and just started playing to our Oud playing...

Ararat66 - 9-29-2008 at 01:42 PM

Kelly is a fine violin player judging by the quick ditty ; he played us at the end of the day - hey Kelly do you have a Kemanche? - I love the sound of those (would love to try one!!) - does anyone play Kemanche? please bring one!!!

Leon

Owain-Hawk - 9-29-2008 at 01:53 PM

Aww, I really wish I could've heard Kelly play the violin!!

Did you record it Awad?

abusin - 9-29-2008 at 04:16 PM

Got to go guys, more video's tomorrow,

charlie oud - 9-30-2008 at 03:16 AM

Thanks Leon, Ive been so inspired since the meet, hearing you all has helped so much and blondie was cool and suited your style !!!.( for those not present, blondie is a fine turkish oud and not some foxy chic that Leon brought along). Thanks to Jameel, Oud prof and of course Mike for joining in this thread, you've all played a part for me, Jameel("The" string supplier who knows what he's talking about), Oud prof(DVD and outstanding sound clips) and Mike, well what can I say mate?, Its common knowledge you have brought so much pleasure to so many. Michael and Awad demonstrated ( though they are probably unaware of this) the ethnic way of playing the oud, soulful and moving. Hey Owain, how's the Shehata?, reckon you'll be the first Brit to take the oud to dizzy hieghts, you've a hot line to something mate, incredible you've only been playing a short time. Glad you liked my Sukar Awad, the range of sounds at the meet gave us all some perspective on oud sound and fine sounds they were. Better sign off for now, I could go on for ever.:D Charlie.

AOUDLOVER - 9-30-2008 at 04:13 AM

it looks that all have a very nice day,, i hope i can join you next time.. or we can make the next day for all Eourop Countires.:xtreme:

Ararat66 - 9-30-2008 at 05:56 AM

Leon

Ararat66 - 9-30-2008 at 07:03 AM

Leon:D

Kelly - 9-30-2008 at 10:43 AM

Owain-Hawk - 9-30-2008 at 10:53 AM

Hi Charlie, thanks for the compliment. Yeah the Shehata is doing really well, I love it even more than before. Everytime I play it and listen to other Players that I like, I notice it sounds similair to the Ouds they play.

By the way, I don't like to say I have a favorite Oud from all those that I got to play, but your Sukar and Leons Blondie are up there with the best, what amazing sounds. :airguitar:

Ararat66 - 9-30-2008 at 12:57 PM

Hello Awad

You mentioned you'd have to edit stuff - thinking of it why would you need to? I know the forum is up for anything like this.

enjoy your Eid

Hi Leon, all,

Sorry guys, I was celebrating Eid so haven't uploaded anything as I still have very tasty photos of the event ;)

Leon you know nothing needs editing all the materials are ligit and origional, are you worried about anything mate

I'd made the mistake of my life over the Eid break trying to load a 1.9 GB video to google at once  and that meant my PC was trying in vain on my slow broadband for 10 long hours :( with no joy, so I'll have to do some cuttings to shorten the clips.
So bare with me folks, I am working on it ..

Ararat66 - 10-2-2008 at 04:42 AM

Hi Awad

Of course I'm not worried, I'm not made like that :D. If you remember on the day you said you'd edit the stuff presumably so the file sizes were not so huge. I think the forum are really up for seeing all the stuff, and would be really interested in Usta Mussa's talk on the development of the oud - brilliant stuff. Awad I love the song you played with Kelly on violin beautiful heartfelt stuff - you're a wonderful musician!!

Cheers

Leon

abusin - 10-2-2008 at 05:26 AM

Sorry mate about the editing bit I hought you meant something else
Do you know Leon we've rcorded nearly two hours 3/4 of it was Mussa's lecture, its going to be a tedious job cutting small chunks and uploading to google. I'm thinking  I'll U2U this thoughts later.. anyway nothing will be wasted you will see everything, even you getting high on the shesha :))

regards to the family,

Kelly - 10-2-2008 at 11:25 AM

I'm looking forward to this Awad. I know you have put alot of work into recording the day!

All the best. Any plans for Sunday?

Ararat66 - 10-2-2008 at 11:50 AM

Hi all

Here's a very short clip of me on my Tasos Blondie I did this morning just after the girls had gone off to school. The file compression has made the sound sharper than it actually is but it is a taster for all the stuff Awad has.

Thanks for all your work Awad

Leon

hama - 10-2-2008 at 12:50 PM

where is the attachment Leon?

Ararat66 - 10-2-2008 at 12:55 PM

having trouble uploading

I'll try again sorry!!

Ararat66 - 10-2-2008 at 01:00 PM

Here's the link to youtube (I'm new to uploading this stuff)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ6L0ieV7e4

Thanks

Leon

Owain-Hawk - 10-2-2008 at 01:05 PM

Hey hey, that was nice!! Love your style on the fingerboard. Do you play populour Armenian Maqamat? I know all the main Arabic ones (Rast, Saba, Ajam, Nawahwand, etc...) but I don't know any Turkish or Armenian or any like that.

Keep up the good playing, :xtreme:

Owain-Hawk - 10-2-2008 at 01:18 PM

Well, if we're upload taqsims, here's one I did the other day with the Shehata Oud I got from Kelly. :D

http://www.box.net/shared/e51nle80ob

Ararat66 - 10-2-2008 at 01:37 PM

Lovely stuff Owain - great feel for microtones already. Maqams are the same for Armenian/Turkish/Greek as far as I know, but up a tone. There is a different feel and 'way' towards the East. Then you get some players from somewhere in between like Syria and Lebanon who seem to have a mixture of both sides.

I think we are a warm up act for the rest of the footage;)

Can you tap dance?? I make a great cup of tea :)

logging off

Leon

Owain-Hawk - 10-2-2008 at 01:38 PM

Haha, thanks Leon. See you later. :wavey:

Kelly - 10-3-2008 at 02:28 PM

Hey you two, excellent playing- keep it going and put some more out. You are the act fellas

I'll try to down/up load something in the next few days. I think last weekends gathering has certainly unleashed some creative juices!

See you soon

Owain-Hawk - 10-3-2008 at 02:38 PM

Okay Kelly, you asked for it!! ;)

I make a few mistakes and the playnig is a bit rigid in these (both same Maqams and style)

Raabiah - 10-3-2008 at 04:11 PM

Thanks Charlie! :) Could you upload a taqsim with your Sukar, I loved your playing and want to hear more. :applause:

Raabiah, it's a pity you couldn't come, but there's always next time!! I'm sure you'd have enjoyed it. Get practising and we'll see you next time! :D

Kelly - 10-4-2008 at 03:03 AM

Great playing Owain. I like the change into Saba.

What recording set up have you got coz the sound is good with a touch of reverb.

Owain-Hawk - 10-4-2008 at 03:06 AM

I only have a basic microphone designed for chatting on instant messangers ect. But I record it into Audicity and export as MP3, then I load up FL Studio and Add a bit of EQ and Reverb. It's a massive difference from the original quality, and the uneffect MP3 doesn't even sound like the Oud.

SamirCanada - 10-4-2008 at 06:44 AM

Nice playing Owain,
you have a great feeling. Keep it up.

Owain-Hawk - 10-4-2008 at 06:56 AM

Thanks Samir!!

Kelly - 10-4-2008 at 08:12 AM

Thanks for the info Owain. I tried exporting as mp3 but computer says NO. Will try another way.

Owain-Hawk - 10-4-2008 at 08:35 AM

Maybe you could send me the Audicty file to my email and I could export it and add effects if you want??

Kelly - 10-4-2008 at 10:44 AM

Hi Owain I'm trying via Olympus dictaphone. working on that hijaz/saba mood. hope it travels if not I'll send you an email.

Owain-Hawk - 10-6-2008 at 11:12 AM

C'mon you guys, where is everyone?! Kelly, where is your Taqsim! :D

Here's another of mine...

http://www.box.net/shared/dld02du2tb

charlie oud - 10-6-2008 at 11:37 AM

Sorry Owain I dont have the kit, my son says he'll record me soon and post it on. Nice Nahawand, atmospheric you've bonded with your Shehata, well done mate :applause:

Owain-Hawk - 10-6-2008 at 11:39 AM

Yeah, I'm starting to play slower more depressing style now, maybe it's just the weather?

Looking forward to your taqsim...

hama - 10-6-2008 at 11:51 AM

Owain-Hawk - 10-6-2008 at 02:46 PM

Hi Kelly, sorry, I didn't mean to rush you!!

I tried the file, it didn't work, I need the folder too, with all the data. It should be next to the Audicty file...

Owain-Hawk - 10-7-2008 at 04:05 AM

Okay Kelly, I'll look out for it.

abusin - 10-7-2008 at 06:29 AM

Trust me guy's more videos will come, but while I'm doing this I've got very nice shots from our meal at one of the "Curry Mile's" best resturant's .. me, Kelly, Leon and M Mussa ..

The resturant was full and as we were lead to our table the whole crowed was looking at us with big smiles, thinking they striked a good deal of a meal and some musical entertainment :)) as we had our ouds with us.... we just kept smiling :D

We tuned heads that night guy's, don't you think so Kelly ;)

The same happened at the Shisha Joint ... sorry :(

abusin - 10-7-2008 at 06:34 AM

Michael Mussa, whassup man I was fasting ;)

abusin - 10-7-2008 at 06:38 AM
