I've always daydreamed about making an oud with ebony and holly alternating ribs. Sort of a "convict" or "referee" oud. 
I doubt that I'll be doing that anytime soon, but to satisfy the urge, I took a few moments today and made these from some ebony and holly. I think an
entire black and white oud would be quite striking, and with some inlays like this, the result would be quite striking.

Beautiful pieces. You really have become the king of inlay. they fit together so precisely it looks like they grew that way. Not bad for "a moment"
from your day.
Go do it, Jameel! You're half way there (!). Easy for me to say, I know - imagine Holy is nearly as tough to work as Ebony. But aesthetically it
gives an even more pure white colour than maple. A bowl with both would look fantastic. And if you ever make it over this side of the pond, your could
sell it as official Newcastle United merchandise (Charlie might bite).

Jameel, really beautiful inlay. A few years ago I was in Peter Kyvelous' shop and he showed me an oud he had just finished. It was made of a light
wood and ebony. The contrast was striking and it was enhanced with holly and ebony filler stips between the ribs. I'm sure that all of us will be

I'm sure Peter's oud was incredible. His oud on the last issue of American Lutherie was gorgeous. Incredible woods.

Dramatic contrast of woods Jameel. Very much like the ivory/ebony lute bowls of the 17th C. Better than ivory - in every way - no doubt. Where do you
find holly of sufficient dimension for ribs?
Sadly holly does not grow in this part of the world - although it did in my garden in Northern U.K.
