Hi Sam I use LaBella Arabic tune on my Shehata and I tune EAdgcf. In may I will come in Cairo, so I will have another oppurtunity to buy a new one from Shehata. I think that the beatifull voice come from Canadian red chedar and Canadian walnut, in my opinion this woods works very well in Shehata style.

The Rosettes :)

So obviously becuase they cover the sound holes, the sound is dimmer, and the sound ends up being more old school. But for my next oud, I want to ask Mo to use bone or even plastic for the rosettes. On my current oud the rosettes are made from some sort of ply wood and I think they block a bit of the sound from getting in and out, especially that I use a low tuning and light tension strings.

Hey I was also wondering if the sound holes had to do anything with the sound. Can you please tell us more detail about how different sound hole designs would make the oud sound different?

All the Shehata I have had in the past was without shamasi, but for me the most important thing in Shehata is brace pattern. I think that cedar, softer than spruce work well with this brace pattern. I have another egiptian oud with shamasi, with very different braces and a wavy soundboard. This instrument have a mellow sound.

Its quite a simple thing really. If the oud has shamasi the sound is going to be softer, as there is something in the way of the soundholes from allowing the strings to resonate loudly and also let out the resonated sound. So if an oud has no shamasi, obviously the sound will be louder :). My shehata for example has three very busy shamasi, with arabic calligraphy and dense decorative patterns, so automatically the soundholes surface is reduced becuase there is so much in the way; moreso because the shamasi are made from wood. And a soft sounding oud is not such a bad thing, its more old school. The other extreme is a very loud oud, the perfect example is floating bridge ouds, especially with the longer string length - they can sound almost like a quitar!

I agree with Melbourne, probably because the air inside came out slowly.
I have a copy of a Torres guitar named "leona" with the tornavoz.
The tornavoz is different from shamasi but create somithings similar. Softer, round, intimate, mellow. The difference is that tornavoz add proyection.
In May I will bee in Cairo, so I will have the chance to test some Shehata with shamasi and to hear the difference.
