shareen - 12-2-2008 at 07:33 PM
Oh, here we go again, with poor Abu Ala and his "fake" ouds
Just enjoy it, my friend. Abu is a great builder (I have one of his) and I also have 2 original Nahats. His oud stands up to each one of my Nahats.
Saalem , Shalom

hi zaher... can u post a pic of the oud's back ?
DaveH - 12-4-2008 at 01:20 AM
Would be good to see the back. Pictures of Abu Ala's own ouds in the past have shown very fine work. The work here seems very good too, but the grain
of the wood itself is very wide.
Marina - 12-4-2008 at 02:53 AM
I have Abou Alla's Nahat "copy" and the grain is big as well. I was wondering why
is so, but later I saw some more expensive ouds of other makers with wide grain too.
What do you think about this wide grain issue?
This are those two ouds one beside theother - Zaherali's & mine

So the question is....is it really a Nahat if the face has been changed? Isn't the sound board the most important part of the oud? Can you really
still call it a Nahat. It is really a hybrid Nahat. WAs the original face so bad that it could not be restored?
suz_i_dil - 12-7-2008 at 06:53 AM
Same opinion than Shareen, for me once the face has been changed it is not a Nahat anymore, but here an Abo Alla oud with a vintage bowl.
Brian Prunka - 12-7-2008 at 10:26 AM
I think it depends on how well it was restored . . . if the original bracing was mostly intact and could be saved and the new face cut to the same
thickness and braced with the exact same dimensions/positions as the original, I think you should still think of it as a Nahat, but a "restored"
Nahat.
Generally, though, I agree with you guys. I have a Nahat bowl with a Najarian face and it sounds much more like a Najarian than a Nahat. I like the
bowl and the size of the oud though, so I think I'm going to have a new face put on it by Najib Shaheen; he understands the Nahat type of bracing
better than Najarian and may be able to copy the bracing from one of his similar Nahats.
