Quick clip - mystery tune

DaveH - 12-18-2008 at 03:40 AM

Hello all

When I was about 10 years old, I spent about 6 months in Damascus as my father was working there. My sister was given a music box by our neighbours. It played a very simple but beautiful tune, in hijaz, as I now realise. I've tried to remember it in this clip but it's quite a while since I heard it and I'm sure I'm messing it up so some extent -0 especially the rhythm. Does anyone have an idea what it might be? (of course it might actually be a western tune in an "oriental" vein - it reminds me a bit of pieces by debussy and satie).

Mystery tune

I think it's "shishkebab". It is definitely in Hijaz. Sounds like something that would be in a music box of that period.

I believe I have the score somewhere.

For some reason, it's reminding me of "Foug El Nakhal". It's Hijaz also:

Many thanks for your help all. I knew if the answer was out there, this forum would provide it.

Hama, sorry, I can't really hear it...

Spyros, "shish kebab"... well, now I feel a fool with my Debussy and Satie comparison. Still, a good tune is a good tune. Any chance of you being able to dig out the score or provide a link to a recording?

Maher, thanks, I like that song too and that's a really nice version, but I don't think it's the one.

I guess to some extent all hijaz songs are bound to sound somewhat similar.

ShishKebab

I'll try to append a scan I made of a transcription from my now departed teacher Mimi Spencer (God rest her beautiful soul), made incidentally almost to the day, six years ago before she passed.

As a bonus, you get her transcription of another Hijaz favorite, "Ah ya Zein".

There's an interesting story behind this rendition of ShishKebab, perhaps left for another day.

Make sure you display it at 100%, or open it with MS Paint. If you want to print it out, you will have to shrink it down a bit.

Also here's a link to one of the many performances I found on the Web. If you don't see it on the page search for title 'Shish-Kebab' or go to page 3

http://www.bhuz.com/index.php?cmd=/public/music/page_3/

I have a feeling that this was the tune in the music box.

Many thanks Spyros for digging that out and for your U2U. I'm still not sure it's the same tune but it really is hard sometimes to tell. Anyway - two very nice pieces to keep me out of the pub.
