How to make a decent pegbox

GranadaOtta - 1-12-2009 at 07:14 AM

Dear members,

I was just wondering if you could help me out in making a new pegbox for my Oud. My old pegbox is giving me a hard time. So, if you could be kind enough in posting some of your suggestions, pictures of how to make a decent pegbox from scratch, and other advice you have for me, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hi,

You can look at the project section in this forum and you will couple of members made oud for them self, step by step with pictures including pegbox. There is no standard size or design, each maker has it own way and design but they look same in general.

Peg keys you can buy them from some maker. I have seen some maker using Violin keys or you can use your previous keys.

Good Luck

I can't imagine what "hard time" would jusitify making an entirely new pegbox. Unless the walls are split, or the box is broken in half, there's probably no reason to replace it. If your pegs slip or stick, application of some peg conditioner might be all you need. You can buy it at any music instrument store. If your pegs are softer than the pegbox walls, they will have a shoulder where they enter the wall, and will never fit. These can be replaced with viola pegs, which are slightly larger than common oud pegs. You'll need a peg hole reamer to install them, and conditioner after they are fitted. A step by step picture or instruction is too lengthy to post here, but the pegbox construction is included in the Oud Construction Book
