Arabic Oud Teacher - Philadelphia

Rhett - 3-10-2009 at 12:55 PM

Hello,
I've been reading this board for a while - though I haven't been a member. I've been playing Oud independently now for a little over 2 years, though I've had prior musical training. I am in love (as I know everyone else is), but I've recently hit a very wide plateua - and cant see the next climb really. I have two Egyptian Ouds of moderate quality, one in the common C tuning, and the other in the D G a d g c - which I believe to be similar to the standard Turkish tuning.

I am interested in working with an instructor, a guide, to first off find out where I am in terms of my independent study (since Najib left brooklyn - I have no real judge), and second - to guide me onto a more focused and traditional path of playing. For about two months now, I have begun to feel trapped in Hijaz / H-kar, Bayati, Saba, Rast, Nahawand. I then started playing some stuff that sounded kind of Yemeni, but the jins seemed wrong but sounded right. I don't want to feel this way, but I need to leave them (modulate).

Now for the questions::: Are there any available teachers in Philadelphia, and what are your rates/availability? Would it be more conducive for me to study with a player of the Arabic style over the Turkish style, given my instruments?
Many thanks for your views to this post.

Hi Rhett,

If you have trouble finding someone in Philly, feel free to contact me about lessons online. I live in Jersey City, and actually have students in the Philly area who take online lessons, or visit occasionally.

You can email me for more information and rates if you are interested. Regardless of your background or school of playing, I think I could probably help you out.

Take care,

Mavrothi

Hello Mavrothi
Thank you for the response, and I will definitely email you soon for further information. I'm definitely interested in how online classes would work, as I've basically been teaching myself strictly through online sources. I'm thinking of applying to Simon S's retreat this summer, so I'd like to be a bit more refined by that point - through having somebody whipping me along. Many thanks!

I look forward to hearing from you, and would be happy to help you prepare.
