new shehata and a great teacher!

Danielo - 5-12-2009 at 02:20 PM

Hello everyone,

few months ago I was lucky to find this nice shehata :) it is a single hole model with walnut bowl and sounds great! warm sound, good basses and 'creamy' trebles.. I was suprised how easy to play it is, with very low action and perfectly sized neck. I like also the simple design, and the finish is good (appart from some sloppy glue at the end of the fingerboard). This is my first shehata now I understand why so many here are happy with his ouds ;)

....and shortly after I had the privilege to take few lessons with our friend JT in Paris :D Despite my very modest skills he was always very patient and encouraging, and I learned immensly :)

... finally a short taqsim with the shehata. Forgive me for my poor playing, it has improved a lot thanks to JT but I still need years of practice

Wow Danielo!
A very nice sounding oud! and Beautifully plaid!
You have a very good "feeling"! Love the way you "flirt" with the scale!!
And obviously JT is a very good teacher!

Congratulation.

p.s. I don't know what kind of pick you are using! maybe you should consider something less hard!
I love turkish narrow plastic piks (sorry, don't know what they are called. But I am sure JT can help you with that)

Keep up the good work.

I meant every word of it :D

I actually heard your impro 3 times : )

Luttgutt - 5-14-2009 at 06:41 AM

By the way, maybe you could try the picks that Jameel Khalaf offers!?
p.s. Just try as many as possible different picks, and try them for at least a couple of days before deciding.. sometimes it takes time to know before you know that a pick suites you or not!

Hope to hear more impros from you : )

Congratulations :)

Don't underestimate yourself.. you play well and I enjoyed your recording :)
Changing the risha was a good proposition ;)

Keep it on and keep on posting :)

I agree with the others - lovely stuff. The pick question mayb just a case of really relaxing the wrist ... it seems to take some of the click out of the risha sound. It takes time so don't try to rush - I'm still trying to perfect this but it will get there with gentle practice.

I just have a question.. are you sure it is a walnut bowl? I am no expert by any means.. but it looks more like rosewood than walnut.. Just curious nothing else.

Danielo - 5-14-2009 at 12:58 PM

thanks again guys, it is very encouraging :) I'll work for another soundfile ;)

Luttgutt, are Jameel's risha already made? (I am not sure of my abilities of making a good one myself..)

Leon, you are exactly right (this is what JT told me all the time ;) )..

Reda, about the bowl's material, I am not sure at all as I bought the oud second hand (the previous owner had no idea). Is rosewood supposed to have some reddish color? This one is dark brown
