Ezra Aharon (Izuri Efendi) was born in baghdad in 1903. He played iraqi maqam like you have said, in 1936 he came to palestine, and later he helped
form the israeli national radio's arabic orchestra. He played there until the 70s and when he was asked who will replace him he said "Only one, Yusef
el-awad" (Yosef Shem-Tov, I will try and upload some music by him).

thanks Masel for the info. Did he make other recordings of iraqi music later?

Like I said he played in the israeli national radio's arabic orchestra. They made a tons and tons of recordings (which are mostly locked up in the
archives...), from original compositions of members of the orchestra to classical samaiat etc. and folk songs. They were one of the most prolific
orchestras and were very well known not just in israeli but also in the countries around. They also had great musicians - on violin Felix Mizrahi,
Daud Akram, on qanun Avraham Salman, on Nay Alber Elias...
This is the only thing of theirs I can find right now, the singer is egyptian-born Faiza Rushdi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeoxm-xJp7I

Hi Dan,
This web site sells 60+ titles available of Iraqi music, most of which was recorded by Iraqi immigrants in Israel: http://www.israel-music.com/browse/music/oriental/iraqi/
If you want traditional music, you need to listen to the samples, since some recordings, especially newer ones, use synthesizer.
Some of the best are from Filfel Gourgy.
Enjoy!
Best,
John

danielo, Salim al-Nur has a cd which this samai is taken from (plus a samai in maqam iraq which i analized a while ago, http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=7427#pid465... (by the way i made a mistake the rhythm in the last verse is not egreg it is either 3 or 6). there are other artists which have cds with the
orchestra - the violinist Daud Akram has i think 4, Yosef Shem-Tov has one or two, Faiza Rushdi, all these i have. there are probably others but in
general for some strange reason the radio station doesn't easily let the materials out which is a crime in my opinion..
