Turkish or Arabic

xaoseph - 6-18-2009 at 11:23 AM

Hey guys, first of all let me introduce myself. I am an amateur oud player in central florida, and self-taught.

I have an oud that was apparently made by Mr. Sukar at oudsukar.com, and i was wondering how i would tell if it was an arabic oud or a turkish oud.

Thanks

Thanks a lot. It's an Arabic one, so I've been using the wrong tuning for years :/

What kind of tuning are you using?

Sukar is a Syrian based oud maker and, as far as I know, does not make a Turkish model. Scale length is not always a good indicator of oud type. Some makers now produce "Arabic" ouds with scale lengths as short as 58 cm.

But your Sukar oud will be an "Arabic" oud and the most popular (modern) tuning for an Arabic style oud is C FF AA DD gg cc.
