who are master oud players?

al oskarku - 9-3-2009 at 12:59 PM

Hello Everybody,
I don't play oud yet, but I am working toward buying one. At the moment I'm trying to discover as much as I can about the instrument, the music and the cultures.
I've loved Oud music for a long time without knowing what I'm listening to. Now, I want to learn the names and traditions of oud music.
I would like to ask you all, if you had to choose some essential players of oud, who would they be? Who do you think are the great masters of the oud?

I think this forum is great, I've learnt a lot from here already, and I've only just begun on this great journey of oud.

I look forward to your suggestions,
Joseph

a lot of goooood people present and past my top two favorite of all time:

- Munir Bashir
- Marcel Khalifa

Other popular names :
Naseer Shamma
Charbel Rouhana
Farid al Atrash
Simon Shaheen
Abadi Al Gohari
Mamdouh al Gibali

new young guys who I recently discovered and are pretty good:
Ahmad al Khatib.
Nizar Rouhana
Omar Bashir

and many many more

Sorry for being biased, a lot of good non-arab players as well (which I know very little about)

Welcome to the forum al oskarku!

As fhalaw says, lots and lots of good names to listen to!

It has a lot to do with the personal taste and the style ou like.

My all time top two favorites are:
1-Jamil Bashir (the brother of Monir Bashir)
2- Anouar Brahem.

But none of the two can be classified as "traditional" player.

Some good traditional style players:
1- Asabji
2- Farid
3- Sombati (I newly discocerd his oud style, thanks to this forum)

And of course as fhalaw says, the young Ahmad Al Khatib.

And yes, many many others (luckily : )

p.s. Here, I restricted the list to arabic style (not turkish).

Good luck on your quest

Also, you can find a whole world of oud recordings on oudstouch.tumblr.com The site manager has posted hundreds of oud songs with their album covers, player names, etc. It's a really great site for finding new players.

There are 6 tracks by Salim Al Maqrashi at the start of the first CD of the four-CD set "Al Tarab - Muscat Oud Festival" - see here:
