Danielo, I'm not qualified to grade your playing in the Egyptian dimension. Sounds good to me. I love the tone you get and the only thing that comes to mind is getting more swing from the risha and adding a little drama by changing the rhythm and maybe modulating to a Hijaz type maqam for variety on one of the phrases?

About the Egyptian style: well, by no means I pretend to be idiomatic but I started bayati revolving around the tonic (dukah) rather than around the dominant (nawa) which seems common in Egypt (I think this is more properly called maqam ussaq then)... Also I stole few sentences from Sunbati's taqsims :D

Actually I did use bayati shuri that has Hijaz tetrachord but you are right I did not exploit really its emotional potential..

Too many things to think about : plucking correctly, playing in tune, follow the flow of the maqam... At this stage my mind is too busy with all this for giving tarab :shrug:

To add to what has already been said, there is a slight gap between when your risha first touches a string and when it actually plucks the string to vibrate. This causes a somewhat awkward picking sound. Try to pluck at the instant you touch the string. Otherwise, good work; keep going and I'm sure you'll be something to talk about.

actually I think that my risha is too much inwards, close to the face, so it probably slides on the strings before leaving them free.. that's also why I'm hitting the pickgard so often.

Hello Danielo,

I think the major problem is that you play taksim like a song with a constant movement on the right hand. A taksim should be less mechanic with many arabesques with the risha... BTW, it's really good and you should keep going :)

I confirm, the old maqam Dukah is named nowadays Bayyati when you start around the note Nawa and `Ushaq Turki when you start on the note Dukah.

There is something you're doing that I don't understand the cause of, but it's as if a digital delay were being used, everything is echoed. I guess it's how you double pick every note. That gets a little monotonous.

Let me throw this out here for consideration: Tarab is number one. Relax the body and focus the mind.

The beauty of the Taqsim concept is that the framework is relatively simple, namely the home maqam and the idea of modulating through related maqamat. I don't think that rehashing "the great" traditional taqasim and even strictly staying in a given maqam while modulating can possibly be as important as "giving tarab". Also I'm not sure "should be" is a terribly useful concept when "can be" is available. That means that being tense while playing is not useful or productive. Screw it! Just pray for beauty.

I agree Tony, when I stick on a taksim there's no emotion, but to me it's necessary to stick and understand before I can fly with my own wings... More I learn by heart more I feel comfortable when inspiration comes and makes me play my own pieces ! I like this kind of image of a famous jazzman (can't remember which one) who played at home during 10 years by repeating modes before he played THE perfect sound. I hope for that perfect sound one day, and rehashing good stuffs can't be bad, we just have to keep in mind this is student work, not inspired music :shrug:
