Hey Flip, any publicity is good publicity, (especially when it shows the whole world how good you are!)

I'm Just being sarcastic Guys! I don't mean to offend JT and other Players here. Sorry Guys! ;)

Off Course Good Publicity and Exposure to the audiences (I Mean not Familiar to the Oud) will be an advantage to spread Your work and Composition to the non familiar audiences.

Triple Plus 4 JT!:applause:

Cheers

you do have a very good point Phil! ...and I am very sure JT thought hard before agreeing to play there. But he has so much class in what he does, that he couldn't help but bring Grace to the situation... and anyway the people who watch such music are not really MUSIC fans... JT has great courage to put himself there because who knows who he might 'touch'. He puts the oud and great oud playing right out into the zone where you would normally never find it.

One the other hand, my guess is that in a few years from now when JT is even more established in his career, then he will probably opt out of such situations... and this is ok also - - - leave it for the up and coming players.

That's exactly what I'm Saying Edward. It Put the oud into spotlight that nobody has experience it. especially the non musician audiences.

Glad u Said This!:D

Hopefully other oud players continue spreading the love in oud playing even in a non musician Audiences.

We may not know, maybe in some years it will turn unexpectedly in the oud carrier music. Positively its a good chance of Survival against some cheesy audiences that like POP music only.:D

Have a Great Day Edward!

Cheers Pal,

i think that oud is truly an instrument with a unique and amazingly beautiful and capivating tone. The first time I heard it, I was mezmerized and knew i had to learn it too.

the oud will definitely survive simply because it IS great! Sometimes on this planet qualilty really DOES mean something - and this is the case with the oud. Nobody is sponsoring the oud with millions of $$$$.... it is thriving and growing simply because it is truly beautiful.

Same here bro, It has an enchanting sound, and haunting as well. If u pull-off the right maqam for it.

YES!!!
I didn't mention that the first oud playing I heard was MAQAM playing -- not some 'guitar style' oud playing which I often find irritating.

In my opinion the MAKAM is just as beautiful and important and the OUD... the two go TOGETHER like man and womans' bodies. . . perfect fit - perfect match - and the result is greater than the sum of it's parts!

Damn! baby! that's pretty sweet ain't?

Its like this some guitar players want to learn the oud, and incorporate some guitar techniques on the oud, and the other hand some oud players want to be guitar players by playing chords on oud. woot!

That's kinda vice-versa a little irritating.

kindest regards

Philip

when i was at the ARAB OUD HOUSE in Cairo... I got into a big arguement with M. Abousekri - the 17 year old professional oud player. The French gov't was paying a French young woman to go around with him everywhere and film him to make a future documentary about him. And then he was getting sponsored to go and study in France.

I mentioned that I wondered if he might consider there to be any risk in this (studying French music), in that he would learn all about the 12 tone -equaltempered scale, and chords and harmony - - - would there not be a risk to the already dying Modal system, and maqam microtonalism.

It was actually foolish for me to enter into such an arguement because nobody sitting there listening including Mohammed was even aware of what the 12 tone-equal temperament system is. And the result I think is that they walked away thinking I was a looney:shrug:

I am very happy that the ARAB OUD HOUSE exists, but I was dissappointed in that there seemed to be not much notice or emphasis on the maqam heritage and in fact playing 'guitar style' seems to be the 'word of the day'.

Sorry to hear that my friend.... Its seems awkward because maqam heritage should be the one that they promote not "Guitar syles" Incorporated. But I'm sure all the people there know this heritage and it's normal for them to speak Maqams and Heritage. and some already not bother at all. But I think the rest of them "mean well".

Just over-agitated to play some show-off game. Don't worry every Institute of music has this kind of crowds. Best is to stay clear of them. Your Choice BTW.

...yes it was really disappointing for me... and finally I decided just to avoid that place more or less altogether.
I 'interviewed' many of the teachers there, and didn't find even one with what I would consider impressive maqam knowledge.

But yes, they definitely mean well, and are all really friendly and warm-hearted people for sure.

- but I was there with all my baggage of high expectations -

Damn Good thing u said that Once I visit Cairo Oud House I will Keep that in mind.

BTW Oud House here in abu dhabi seems to be different I used to go there and have some lessons. People there seems to be just fine. I Understand the big difference because Cairo is the center stage of players not in Abu dhabi I suppose.

Here in Abu dhabi is ok some know what is the real heritage. One Guy I talk for hours just explaining how Maqam System affects each aspects of each personalities of each Oudist and where this came from and how does it complies in todays modern world. Nice talk though.
But yes, they definitely mean well, and are all really friendly and warm-hearted people for sure.

I Understand why you have some high expectation In cairo because that's the central venue for Good Players.

Well rest assured some people will be open to share some insight deeply in this maqam dilemma that u have encounter.

Thanks for sharing.
