Hanna Nahat - 1921

Hi guys,

I got recently from Adel a nice Hanna Nahat.... It is all original, except the nut.

I'm very very happy :) it has a beautiful old-style sound, with lot of bass...

and it was great to meet Adel and Naziha !

I would like to share with you some pictures of this beautiful old lady

thanks dear oud fellows!

sure I will post a soundfile some day! But first I need to change the strings and above all practice more... I really feel humble while playing this wonderful instrument.

Beautiful simplicity, I love it.

Danielo, can I please ask for the exact dimensions: stringlength bowl length, depth and width, hole diameter and distance of the bridge to the bottom of the face ?

My curiosity is due to the fact that I have a George Hanna from the late 40s and it looks almost identical, even in rosette design, it would be interesting to see if the son was still using the father's mold 30 years later.

Hi Alami,

here are the dims of the oud:
Body length 48.5cm (from neck joint to tail end), width 35.2cm and depth 21.2cm
The neck length 20.1cm (from the end of the nut to the neck joint)
The string length 60.3cm
Distance from the top edge of the sound hole to the neck joint 14.2cm
Diameter of the sound hole 12cm

is it the same as yours?

Exact same bowl dimensions, to the mm.
George (Gergi) was obviously using his father's molds.
It is rather a small and deep oud.

Same hole diameter but distance to the neck joint is 12 (it is a 3 holes oud)
However the stringlength is 59.5 and neck length is 19.6
The rosette is very similar wiyhout being identical but we can logically suppose it is also inherited from his father.

very interesting Alami... Yours has also the same kind of wide grain wood for the soundboard. Georgy was a good student!

Yes this oud is small but still the sound is very bassy.. probably an effect of the depth of the bowl?

I would be glad to see more pictures!

Looks like it is the same wood all over, face and back.
The sound is bassy, I guess yours should be even deeper, it is 30 years older.

Tried to get some quick and rough photos matching yours.

Did Adel told you what is the stain on the upper side of the face, the one that looks like oil stain, not the usage stains?
I did the same kind of stain to my oldest oud by forgetting the eagle risha on its face. These rishas have oil that was drained by the dry wood, I wouldn't have believed that there is so much oil in a risha.

Thanks for the pics Alami.

You have a good eye ! I would not have realized that these ouds are similar so easily as the decoration is quite different..

No I understand that the wide-grain soundboard what really chosen on purpose by Hanna, not because it was cheaper but in order to increase the bass response.. this is probably why Georges did the same choice 30 years latter.

About the stain on the face I don't know (I did not ask to Adel). But maybe you're right it was an old risha!

Is it tolerable here to ask how much does this masterpiece usually cost , or is it rather rude to ask such questions ?
Why ask ? 'cause one might have quite the same & would appreciate a free objective professional evaluation of his treasure.
Thank you

Yours truly
