new oud: Brazilian Rosewood

I would like to share this new oud I have finished building yesterday. Started 2 weeks ago with an Old stock (before 1995) Brazilian rosewood (BRW) and the result is here.
I had some days off with eastern and could progress with the build.

Bowl. Dark Brazilian rosewood. / maplestripes in between.
soundboard: first grade german spruce.
neck/bridge/pickgard : BRW
pegbox: maple/brw/ebony(back)
fretboard/ebony with 2 stripes brw
nut: ebony
pegs: ind rosewood.
string: aquila.
purfling and rosette surrounding / hand made veneer and maple

I will post a sound file in couple of days when the oud has aged a bit.

I don't have a customer waiting for this one. I will keep it first for a while and i'm not sure if I will sell it.

The oud sound very nice.

Looks stunning Sabbassi - bet it sounds amazing. Nizar (Rohana) has recommended your ouds to me if I were to have an Arabic tuned oud ... I'm so tempted.

Brilliant stuff.

Best wishes

Thank you leon, I would be pleased to build an oud for you in the future.

There are more details about this oud than I can describe. the action is very nice the strings goes along the fretboard perfectly. if the strings are to close(low action) they won't breath enouph to make a good vibration if to high, difficult playing etc..

the distance between the strings on the fret is exactly like descibed in the following view : C......G......D.....A.....F....C. the higher strings are closer to eachother as they are not used much when playing, the lower once are wider to make easy playing

for this reason the neck is made 3.8mm at the top and 5.8mm at the neck joint, that makes playing
very smooth.

the face is 1.8mm (finished and varnished), the bridge is about 35 grams.

the braces are all 4.6mm thik from a 50 years old piano brace. picture top right:
regards,

samir

A beautiful oud Samir, really impressive. Your skills seem to improve a great deal with each instrument you build.

Can't wait to hear this newest gem.

Take care,

mavrothi

Hello Samir,

I have been following your rather impressive work for a while. I became a HUGE fan!!!!
I have 2 questions, please:

- I noticed that you introduced a fixed bridge design for the first time. Do you have a certain preference (floating/fixed bridge)?

- How do you tune your ouds?

Thanks for making all of us DROOL :D

Thank you Brian and Mavrothi .

Hatem, thank you my friend, I have made man Fixed bridge in the past. I must say that a fixed bridge is my preference way of making an oud.
I use standard strings arabic tuning CGDAFC

Hi Samir

3 days old and a spruce top ... fantastic sound already .. this will sound phenomenal when it opens up and its full tonal range kicks in.

You should be proud of yourself, you are a really good luthier.

Wow

Leon :)
