A new sound for the oud? Gare de l'est, Phoenix and Give or Take - like?
What are your opinions on these tracks?

jazzy - moves right along - great live, i'll bet. i'm not saying it's a bad thing but i wonder if the oud will always be considered as "fusion"
music.

Hello Bill,
A full concert for JT can be seen on the homepage of his website. It starts with a couple of traditional pieces and goes to jazzier territory.
I think its not considered a fusion instrument in the middle east

i stand corrected.
outside arab and middle-eastern music i think the oud will continue to be considered a "fusion" instrument - added for its "middle-eastern" flavor.
on the other hand ... i do a very nice rendition of johnny cash's "walk the line" on oud.
