Most necessary to build an oud?
Hello,
soon I want to start building my own oud. What are the most necessary tools, the must haves?
Firstly I want to start with cheap woods. Does anybody know a good shop? Could be in Germany, but also in overseas.
I will orientate on the tutorial by http://www.khalafoud.com and also watch a few videos and other web pages!
I suppose that it is an arabic oud in the tutorial? Can I use the tutorial also for making a turkish oud, of course with changing the measures.

Tools:
Band saw or table saw, recommended one is Bosch brand, apable to cut wood 3mm
Sanding table. 90% of the job will be done by this device
Jig saw
Bending iron for the ribs
Curving hand tools
Long and short clamps
Table clamp
Sanding paper
Heavy duty cutter
Glow
Soft hummer which has rubber head
Nails
Sander hand

Company called " dick" ( it is German not English), you will find tools for music instrument making, to take some idea
Dr.oud has very good book about making oud and I strongly recommend this book
for you
Oud projects section in this great forum has very valuable informations, but it needs a bit research. I was reading this section for about 6 months to
get ideas about oud making

There is already in the forum lot of reading material about tools and oud building.
there is no big difference between Guitar, lute or oud building in tools.
like Dubai said, Dr Oud book is a good one to start with like I did in the beginning. start with little and inexpensive tools and you will know
yourself exactly what you need using the forum and old google.
I will start building a new oud from scratch this week and I will share every detail within this forum, and I will also get to tools, sharpening,
French polish and lot of things.
Hopefully we all can learn from it.

Hi,
To start, don't worry about curving hand tools, it is just used for face holes.
For the sharp knife, the one which is used to cut woods, you will find them in " ACE Hardware".
Before you buy any thing, read " oud project" section in this forum and you will find good idea about what to buy.
First tools you would need to start is band saw or table saw and sanding table. Sabbassi sent some pics about his table saw and Faruk recently sent a
pic about his sanding table, just to see how they look like

When I constructed my first oud in 1984 I had these tools:
1- Stanley, Number 7 hand plane
2- Stanley, Number 4 " "
3- Stanley, palm plane
4- Several size and shape chisels
5- Sand papers
6- Systremmas
7- Several hand saws
8- French Polish
I used to attend a carpenter's workshop to cut the ribs and soundboards.
I congratulate you for your commitment to construct ouds. Take it easy!

Merhaba Faruk usta,
if we compare that time to today's time, the possibilitys throught the internet and the technology were increased drastically.
If you have build your first oud in that hard conditions, and I would not manage to build an oud with today's information and technology, I would feel
ashamed of my abysmal skills.
So I must build an oud, there is no way out.

How different is the construction of a turkish oud?
Shorter neck, lower action, smaller body? Something else?

The Turkish oud based on the Manol is not only smaller, but the bracing is different from the Arabic designs. The oud in the Khalaf Luthery tutorial
is from my book and is based on a Hana Nahat model 1910.

After a long time-out I am back and as I finished my school  and have a lot of
time until my studies begin in winter, I want to start the oud project. I've made a list of tools which I will buy, probably some of them will be used
second hand tools.
- Bandsaw which is able to cut wood up to a height of 80mm. Also there is a parallel fence so I can cut the ribs. If you want you can take a look on
the English homepage. I hope the band saw is not a total fail because it is quite cheap. What do you think?
- Belt Sander which can also be used inverted so I have the sanding surface looking to me.
- Jigsaw
- Japanese saw
- Scalpel knife
- Plane
- Card Scraper and gooseneck scraper
- Sanding papers and blocks
- Clamps
- Various rulers and measuring tapes
- Rasp and file
- For bending I will use a metal pot which is heated by a few candles
- Hide glue and shellac
Furthermore I want to buy the book of Dr. Oud and use several documentations in the internet and in this section. Especially I found a good German tutorial. Dr. Oud's book is based on an Arabic oud. Can I also build a Turkish one with it? I also have a Turkish oud at home if
that would help.
Is the list of tools complete?
