Hi Giorgio

Just spotted this and saw a couple of your other vids. I know you are just starting out on oud but not as a musician which is obvious because you can move your fingers well. Here are my initial and humble thoughts.

I can see that you are practicing at full speed some very intricate oudy flicks and phrases which is actually a really good thing to do and somewhat unfashionable - sometimes playing slowly all the time and building up doesn't get you to embody those compound phrases fully and speed should then start to open up to something far more to do with a palatte of textures and expressive outcomes that you can naturally use as the music gets under your skin (and ears).

My advice would be not to stop doing this but also start to concentrate on single note tone production - concentrate on just down strokes and the ease in the wrist this brings ... let the notes ring out ... practice soft to strong tone making and you will develop great touch and feel.

Then try practicing with the accompanying upstrokes until this becomes springy, natural and vibrant (what do I sound like ... an advert for shampoo and conditioner 'cos you're worth it!!). This will lead to triplets, tremelo etc and the resulting rhythmic intricacies that this gets you into.

This will lead to much greater depth and feeling so you are going at things from both ends so to speak. It's great you arre getting things out here for us to listen and share with.

Keep ouding.

Cheers

Leon

Hey Leon,
thanks so so much for the comment. It was very constructive and exactly the thing I need. Spotlighting tips on how to improve the risha work, that was extremely appreciated, and I am very grateful for it. Not finding a teacher who can guide you in the area leads inevitabily to some unorthodox approaches to the instrument. I will take everything you said on board and start practicing in that respect.
Thanks again mate!
Giorgio
