Old Oud
hi, I just joined the forum so I could ask for any info about my oud which I bought in an Istanbul music shop in 1984. I had dreams of learning to
play it, but was distracted down other musical avenues along the way. So its been sitting unused in Australia all these years.
Anyway, inside the belly there's some glued paper with a picture of a moustachioed gentleman and some arabic-style text then at the bottom greek text
in capitals which looks like:
1920 ΚATAΣKEYH 2/65
HΛIA ek ΠEPAMOY
At some point a new soundboard was fitted and this is of poor quality in comparison with the rest of the instrument (I've attached a couple of
photos).
I'm hoping someone out there might be able to shed more light on who made this oud and its background. I'd also like to hear it played again, so if
there's an oud player around Sydney NSW who's interested please get in touch.

hi,
welcome here.
"Ilias Kanakhis (or Ilia ek Peramos) was one a master luthier of Istanbul in the early 20th century. He was Greek in origin, and was born in a small
town called Peramos on the southern cost of the Sea of Marmara. He was known in Turkey as Kapidagli Ilya (which means 'Ilia from the Kapidag
Peninsula'). He worked for many years in Istanbul and later he moved to Thessaloniki, Greece."

it look very nice! if this oud is not being played since a long time you should loosen the strings to avoid any damage.
If you find someone to play it, share the sound!

Thanks for the info about my oud. I hope it will be played again soon.
I've always loosened the strings while its been in storage.
Does anyone know if there is an oud shop in Australia?

nine years later ... I'm still wondering if there's anyone in Australia who could play this old oud and bring it back to life?

Hi from Germany
didn't you know that one of the great Oud-Masters, Joseph Tawadros, lives in Australia?
He is not only a great player, he is also a great guy!!
Dont hesitate to contact him, I'm sure he'll help you if he can.

All the best

To the best of my knowledge, Joseph Tawadros moved to the UK. He still might be a good resource, though.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Of course I've been lucky to see and hear Joseph Tawadros playing his wonderful oud music several times, but I didn't
receive any reply when I contacted him via his website back in 2012. And I always felt too embarrassed to mention my oud to him after the shows.
Anyway, I've just made contact with a local Greek oud player via facebook and I'll contact Zaher as well.
cheers, Ian
