7 course oud for sale in San Francisco
I’m selling a very nice oud that has no problems and many virtues. I have decided to sell it because it is too big for me and is aggravating a
pre-existing right shoulder problem (the oud is not the cause of the problem). It is a 7 course oud, a replica of a 1920 Abdul Aziz el Lethi (al
Lacy) oud belonging to Qassabji. It was made by Michael Moussa and appears to be the very instrument on his (magicstrings) website depicting this
model. The soundboard is spruce. The bowl is alternating ribs of bubinga and a variety of English maple called “sycamore” in the UK (not the
American sycamore). The oud is highly decorated. It is easy to play, has a deep resonant sound in the bass and mids and a clear singing voice in the
treble. The transition between the registers is smooth. This oud is very strongly built and can take the tension of the 7 courses easily. Sukar case
included. I am selling this for a bit less than I paid (including the shipping fees): $1500 usd. I hope to sell it locally (San Francisco, California)
to avoid extra shipping fees for the buyer and to save me the bother of packing it up.
Bowl width at widest is 37cm. Bowl length is about 52.5 cm. Bowl depth is 19cm. Neck width is 4.2 cm. There is no sense of crowding due to 7 courses,
and no discomfort from extra width. Action where neck meets bowl is about 3.2 mm, depending on string diameter. Scale (length of vibrating string) is
just short of 60cm. Single soundhole with rosette.
Here is a sound file demonstrating the sound on a string by string basis. The recording was made on an iMac with built-in mic and is highly compressed
to meet the file limits of this website. Better to come try it out in person.
I'll post photos in another post.
