ALI UFKI FULL BOOK
I recently got an old copy of the Ali Ufki book second hand from Turkey.
It was in very bad condition and falling apart.
I got it printed and spiral bound and scanned,
The book has no copyright and is out of print and hard to find.

The notation is in the bass clef and written from to right to left.
I was wondering if some interested people could help me translate some of the titles, composers and rhythms.
The pieces are grouped by maqam; Huseyni Fasil, Segah Fasil etc.
Here is the first piece in modern notation.
This amazing old repertoire deserves to be more well known

great, everybody should have that. I bought it many years ago in Istanbul.
BTW, it's not bass clef, it’s an arabic jim=g i.e. a g-clef, but, as in French music of the time quite commonly, on the lowest staff-line. This is
Ufuqî’s authograph. The titles specify the maqam, usul, composer, form. Under the music are lyrics, if it is a vocal piece.

Very helpful to know.
Someone on YouTube said it was in 'C' clef.
I was unsure, I just figured out how to write it in Arabic keys, (Rast=C).
I noticed Bezmara play this repertoire in these keys too, Rast=C, Huseyni=D, etc.
Do you happen to know if there is a Saba Pesrev by Papa (Papa Ferruh) in the book?.
I still need to learn to read Arabic / Ottoman script and need some help with the Rhythms and Composers.

if râst is C, husseynî is A. Usually ottoman music is based on the mansûr akkord, i.e. râst=sol G.
Bezmâra is a variety show, not a think tank.
There is a fasl-i sabâ but no peshrev by "papa", I understand he was a contemporary of Kantemîrzâde?
BTW, everybody says "Ufki" but according to Fuat Sezgin, a man with incomparable experience, it should be vocalised: Ufuqî.

Sorry, I meant maqam Huseyni not the note huseyni.
The reason I asked about the 'Papa' piece was because I have a Bashraf by him, but it seems to have been modernised, I was hoping to find another
source.
What do you think of Ensemble Al Kindi's 'Ottoman Perfumes' album?
I am getting the hang of the Ali Ufki notation.
I have found the different maqamat and found many of the pieces that are also in the Cantemir book.
The santur embellishments are noticeable, very rhythmic.
Yesterday I tried playing a few pieces straight from the book.
Getting used to it, reading right to left seems like I am using a 'new' part of my brain' LOL.
I am working on my Arabic (script) and also Byzantine notation.
(I also have many Ottoman pieces in Byzantine notation).

even if its hard for most of us this is one of the most important music ressources concerning this kind of music.
By the way which language is used in this book? I guess the arabic lettering is a common writing for Ottoman, Persian and Arab litterature of that
time.
The composer called Papaz means simply Priest in Greek. It might be the same person with the Ferruh Papaz, or Ruhban. I guess its from the 17th
century.
