Scott Marcus : Maqam Bayati
Hi,
I've read in the Scott Marcus article "The Eastern Arab System of Melodic Modes in Theory and Practice: A Case Study of Maqam Bayati". The author
mentions that the subtilities of the microtonal aspect of arabic maqam are getting lost at present.
Do you have any recommandation of old recordings in which those subtilities can be heard clearly ? I mean recordings that can be used by a oud player
that wants to work this aspect.
Scott Marcus makes also a precise analysis of Maqam Bayati. He describes the way to develop the maqam, and he even shows some patterns that are
commonly used by traditionnal players. Unfortunately he doesn't give any recording recommandations. Do you have any recommandations for Maqam Bayati
?
Best,
Juju

Hi.
Scott Marcus has done some amazing research.
Here is a good example in maqam Bayati by Mohammed Abdel Wahab: Set El Habyeb
Great song too, classic.

His early recordings are very good and helpful with the older tunings.
This a really amazing old qanun taqsim by Mohammed Al Aqqad in maqam Hijaz Kar.
On the old qanun (no mandals).
The sayr (seyir) is intact and full of colour and clever modulations.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
I was wondering if the job done by Scott Marcus about "bayati" has been made on others maqam ? I found very interesting his analysis about the way to
develop the bayati maqam. Is it possible to find the equivalent for Rast, Hijaz, Nahawand in the literature ?
Best.
Juju.

Get hold of Karl Signell's book Makam if you can, he gives examples for many maqamat for seyir, composed pieces and taqsims. The emphasis is
on the Turkish tradition, but it's not that different from the Arabic and they have a common ancestry.
