Percussive technic on oud

Hello
Sometimes i'd like add some percussiv effect on my play but i never found tutorials about that on youtube or ...

For the moment, i know two kind :
Nasser shamma with one hand melodic and percussiv in same time :
http://youtu.be/kcFCEW_vt1U

Driss el maloumi with one hand melodic, the other hand percussiv :
http://youtu.be/9Xw6XyvNy6k

Did you ever see a tutorial somewhere or another technic ?!

Thank you ;)

Make à search for exercices of hammer - pull off in guitar vidéos. That the same kind of technic i guess.
Or why not creating your own exercices ? :)

Hi suz_i_dil
I play guitar and I already searched some hammer exercices on guitar video. But That is not really percussiv effect !
Watch driss el maloumi video shared before and you ll see a real drum effect :) If somebody can explain what happen exactly !... Thank you much;)

hello Sylud
are you using what's app ? In this case U2U me your number I'll try to make you a short sketch for the left hand. Percussive effect is from a very tight hammering, you'll catch it by practicing. Sometime you'll notice he pull off also bass strings still hammering/pulling off for the main melody.

Percussive right hand...I think it is for the show. It's possible to do so, a kind of shirt ryhtmic pattern with thumbs and a kind of rasguedo technic, with nails coming to hit the bowl.
But at 2:42 for exemple, it's obvious the rythmic pattern is not from his right hand. ,Also at 2.51 it's a sound of nails and it's the under part of this finger hitting the bowl. His right hand doesn't meet what we hear, it was recorded before, it's a loop

Thanks for the Driss el Maloumi video! Really enjoyed it.

Doesn't seem like anything is being faked to me, just very well done all around.

Take care,

mav

The video and the audio are not synced properly, this is a common problem on youtube. I don't think it is faked, it just doesn't match up because of youtube.

hello Brian and Mav

i just watched it again and still convinced it's covered with a recorded rythmic loop.
i know on youtube image can unsynced with the sound...But not the two hands..Or am i missing a strange feature of stereo recording :) ?

It's very easy to check the sync, and it's perfectly synced when you follow the left hand. It 's easy focusing on the bass he is pulling as bourdon. Perfectly synced until 1:51 and still synced after when the right hand enter the show.
Now focus on the right hand to what you hear..hum hum.. at 2:07 there is even a quite long rythmic phrasing without a move of a finger. Same at 2.11 when the image widden...etc
It's a loop or this guy a ventriloque :)

and by the way I don't mean it's not possible to master this nor this guy not able to do it. But when you get on tv show maybe you get a bit afraid of any missing.

I'm listening other works from him this evening, I didn't knew this player. He is great, sensitive and inspirate playing

Any other video known of him or someone else playing this way, I mean with the rythmic right hand ?

It's not synced from the beginning. The video is ahead of the sound all the way through. It seems to get a bit worse as the video goes on. They get more out of sync. If you watch carefully, the sounds you hear match up to what you just saw, not what is in the video, that's why it seems like the percussion is continuing after his hand stops. It's pretty far off by 2:07, in both hands. The left hand is also contributing percussive effects because the mic is so hot in order to pick up the notes it is also picking up the attack of his finger hitting the fingerboard.

I've done plenty of video editing, and this is clearly just a case where the synch is off between the audio and the video, likely because of the way it was recorded (from videotape, apparently).

This whole thing is silly.

Very nice concert with great recording quality.
The piece concerning left hand hammer and pulling off playing is here really helpfull to see how the tune is developped with a constant catchy sound...
Merci Marouan, belle trouvaille cet enregistrement!

Thank you friends

Nice quality this video. I understand better and better what happens !
This song is not easy to play and i have a lot of work ... If possible, i will share an exercice about it ... maybe !

I found two other video close to flamenco style, played on oud...
Between rasgueado, slapping and golpe effect ...

Hakan Emre : http://youtu.be/1yHVMtbjJqM
Raed Khoshaba : http://youtu.be/F0VVQhMpKzo

I think the problem is that the oud is not built to play chords. So that is not possible to hit the soundboard and play a single note ... Too much precisely ... With an open tunning and a strong soundboard, no problem ! -->>>
